After 10 years of running a powerglide in my 37 ford, I finally am caving in the world of overdrive. The p/g used a 153 tooth which the 700r converter will bolt up to, but I have been told that I need to use the 168 tooth plate. Comments?

The 700R4 uses a metric converter bolt, so as long as it fits thru the holes or you make it fit thru the holes, you are good. They came from GM using one or the other flexplate.

I would think the teeth on the flexplate is more a function of the starter, not the trans. Just my 2 cents.

yes. and I've seen starters with 9 teeth and 11 teeth. I have never got a understandable answer for this.

There's 4 components that need to work together, converter, flex plate, starter, bell housing.

The starter and flex plate need to be a matched pair & either Pair works on any block. You've got a converter and flex plate that bolts together. I see no reason why, nor ever heard of a reason why either starter wouldn't work with the 700r4.
