This is immediately after pulling mine out of the shop - Chevy 292 with an Offy, 4bbl, Stovebolt cast manifolds, 2" pipe with Porter Steelpacs. I loved it then...and I love it even more now. It's mellowing out quite a bit at idle and even mid-throttle...I get on it and it brapps wonderfully, sounds awesome between shifts, and cackles really nice when I just lift the throttle. In case you didn't guess, I really dig the way this sounds.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2v44D01t3Wc In the future, I'm going to put my lump-port head back on, maybe milled a bit to bump compression...and...maybe...a cam.
My first '53 Chevy had a Corvette exhaust manifold on a (at the time) otherwise stock '58 235, with 2 inch pipe all the way back to the bumper and 36 inch Walker glasspacks. LOTS of rrrrrrrrrrapping when descending a grade.
The question is definitely "can they sound good?" I only mentioned V8s because they are ironically sexy sounding for comparison. I guess the question is also what's a good 6 sound like? (which has been answered) Because mine doesn't sound like much at all and I need to know how to proceed with the piping and such. I'm a designer by education and by trade and that means I'm shallow, the way my car looks to me and the way it sounds are the things that put a smile on my face, even more than it being particularly fast. So I don't want to mess this step up. I also don't want to wake the neighborhood with it, I've got a bike that does that and it's just as embarrassing as it is cool. I'm not trying to fool anyone, all I know is my buddy's high dollar Shelby clone Mustang sounds wicked cool, and I'd love for my low dollar Ranch to sound as good... not the same, not necessarily like a V8, but as good, if it's possible. And I think all y'all have proven that it is.
Youtube just don't do those split 6s justice. YOU GOT TO BE THERE!!!! (or in the neighborhood) From then on you will know what your hearing!!! Hay rainhater, all the high school teachers including my autoshop teachers were glad to see me graduate. Our autoshop was in the basement floor under a couple of class rooms. Desks shook and windows rattled. Love those Smittys.
And the one better than that is a Merlin at full song. But - I have a dualed out 250 4bbl Mercruiser in my 48 Fleetline that sounds really good.
I lived in a rural town when I was a kid. There was a guy with a old mopar that had straight pipes and split manifold. He would come through town at night and then take it up to highway speed. I loved that sound.
This isn't a six or a v8, but it has to be the best sound to my ears... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XgEZ-ZP7xO8 Here's another good one, fast foward to 1:05 for lovely engine noise... (excuse the o/t car, and very o/t six) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZqtJTlXON8 4.0L Jeep... sounds pretty good.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FhrHsRtyrqg 302 GMC... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZ8K8vd3cm0 and for comparison... Ford GT40 w/ 180* Headers http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAOqx_FqueM Blown 427 Cammer FED http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PPJ_B10iy4k Flathead Ford http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jeoU0aG25g
yep, got a 200 with a cherry bomb turbo muffler and split after the muffler. sounds decent at idle. had some people ask me if put a 289 or 302 in it. kinda funny. like they have said before, its sounds low at idle and a bumble bee at higher rpms. i like it.
Here's mine. A little O/T but it sounds good. My wife likes it, just listen to her giggle. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jjTUQOZR7I
In line 6's can sound great, all engines kinda have their own sound and it's all a matter of choice. Hell not even all V8's sound the same, but I still dig an in line 6 with split exhaust. DO IT !!!!! That Falcon sounds great !!! ^^^^^ Sounds cool
NICE! I had a '71 TR6 in Pimento Red with triple webers, long tube headers, 292 cam and a Flowmaster 40 with split tips out the back. Listening to yours brings back some memories. One of these days I'll get another TR6. For the time being I'm tweaking my '67 MGB GT daily driver... but you can't beat a Triumph for British performance.
To answer the question............... does a frog bump its ass when it hops? YES! Even my Stude flathead 6 when I bought it had a stock motor, stock exhaust manifold but they put an old Smithy on it. Sounds fantastic at idle!!! Love that "pop and cackle". But what REALLY sounds cool is a hopped up straight 8 like from a Buick. Nothing else like it!!!!!
Great sounds guys. This one is kinda O/T but not really................ a vintage Chris Craft with a flathead six. I believe they used a version of the Chrysler six. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GayWB-Ap99A&feature=related
They used Chryslers and Continentals, from what I've seen, they look and sound real nice with polished, multi updraght carbs. Got one of those too! Although mine is a '69. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLrglkc8DvU
A six sounds like a six regardless of what you do to it and you can tell it's a six. That being said.. it's not good or bad.. Can a six have a "bad/good" sound? yes, for a six. I like the little crackle they make when they have beefed up or opened exhaust... but it still sounds like a six.
The sound of an inline 6 is an aquired taste. I never have really liked it but to each his own. An inline 4 now is an entirely different subject. I just love the sound of a high winding banger. Reminds me if a swarm of bees.
Here are my 2 six's: 223 Ford I6 200 Ford I6 And I love the sound of a hopped up six... nothing like it
The Porsche is my favorite sounding 6. Had one for awhile, hope I'm able to afford another someday. And no, I really couldn't care less what any of you think about that. To each his own.
