JiiTee, How are things in Finland ? The March 2008 Hot Rod Magazine article and the accompanying youtube video are what inspired me to buy my 1929 Model A Tudor. I could see that I could never hope to accomplish what they did $$$,$$$.$$ but I figured that I could make a good similar Model A Ford sleeper without mortgaging the house. I decided to build mine using a Mercruiser 3.7 liter big block 4 cylinder boat engine. Not as much hp total but better low end torque. I don't expect to match the Cosworth Ford performance nor the handling that these road racing experts have attained, but I will have fun anyway. Dick .
The question was "Can InLines sound good?" Everybody assumes an InLine 6 cylinder. Most of you are too young to remember when guys drove straight EIGHT Buicks, Pontiacs, Oldsmobiles, Chryslers, and Hudsons with either steel pack mufflers or, better yet, NO mufflers. There was a distinctive sound. A six had to to have a split manifold to sound good-the old eights didn't. And what added to the "ambience" was that they were all low speed torquers and would pull from a walk in high gear. That was a sound. And as far as U-Tube goes, the camera/mike needs to be several car lengths behind the subject car and its unique exhaust-you can't tell (hear) a thing when it's right on top of the engine. And splits on sixes need to be separated at the rear of the car. Otherwise they don't sound any different than an un split with a loud muffler.
Here is one of my inline's. Hall-Scott, 1091 cubic inch, SOHC, dual plug, hemi six. <object width="480" height="385"> <embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/BOBMerHf9DA?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></object>

i'm looking for a detroit 360 I6 , i hear you can get some serious ass out of em and they sound like angry death.
Here almost everybody wants the V8 under the hood. I'm runnin' my Comet with 170cid six and ain't gonna swap V8 in it. Most of the folks think that inlines are junk and powerless. V8 is only choice... Allthough I don't have anything against V8 but it's nice to see and hear other engines too. I know that Model A was built without saving any money and I'd rather do it like you said. Some have lots of money and some don't but still they build great hot rods and customs. That BDA Cosworth engine was used in race cars (etc. small european Escort and Cortina) in back late 60's and 70's. That Mercruiser engine is huge was it only on boats?
I've always loved inlines, but it has nothing to do with how they sound. I always thought that they sound like farm equipment and the best sounding inlines I've ever heard tended to have the quietest mufflers. But, although it's not my favorite sound, I still dig them.
4's, 6's, and 8's powered us into the modern age and each can claim a right to that. They each have their own sound, and I can't pick one against the other as being 'better' I have a new camera that does a good video .....as soon as I figure how to post I'll post one of this.......sounds good to me. To answer your question .......IL6's sound great, the last thing you should be worrying about is the missing two cylinders.. When they're loud, they're cool, ..end of story.
hay cobb, new dude here.me mate had a late 80s falcon that sounded phat i reckin it was in the cam a.straight 6 banger with a dule system. i;m jus goin through the same with my 66 falcon.got the flows, now i gotta sort out the rest.maybe try sleving your longest straight pipe, deeper note.
I had a 66 Mustang that had the small six in it and I threw a Flowmaster on it for sh!ts and giggles and it actually sounded pretty good. Some people thought it was a 289 car. lol
