Buddy Dave that has the 62 Galaxie that was at Lloydfest this year just bought a 63 Galaxie XL, it's been sitting since 75. Had these wheels on it. We're having trouble finding any markings on them. 2 piece as you can see. Any ideas? IMG_20241024_174749.jpg IMG_20241024_174746.jpg

Left spoke at 10 o’clock position has something. Here it is flipped 180 so that it’s no longer a reverse image. IMG_3271.jpeg

I think there were a few copycats back then, and can't remember each one. However, for you and anyone else who wants to dig deep, this site might help.

If memory serves right there were a number of outfits selling a very similar wheel back in the day. I wouldn't doubt that a lot of them were made in the same plant and the big difference was the center cap and the writing on the box they were shipped in.

The thing about old wheels, is that the generic ones didn't have a name on them, but the name brand wheels did. So, if it does have a name, you don't have to ask (because you already know), and if it doesn't, you also don't have to ask (because it doesn't matter).

The steel rim/aluminum center was pretty common, and it was not a "good" thing. It was just cheaper to make them that way.

Yeah, like has been already said, lots of knock offs made. One thing I do know about these steel aluminum mix wheels is when they are stored outdoors and get as rusty as this one looks the rust between the steel and aluminum can grow and break the wheel or make it run not true....

I don't know what his plans are. I told him I'd post them to try and see who made them. I did wind up getting the M20.

Now that I think about it I have a pair of those in 14 ". Came with a pair of real American for the rear in 15" Most can't tell the difference from 10 feet away if the back does not show .

About 10 years ago at Jefferson I had a space and the guy across form me had some wheels for sale and two were Torque thrust style with center caps indicating they were ET'S
, I looked at them all week end and watched guys walk up and see the caps and walk away as they were not American . packing up on Sunday I walked over and looked at them as they were 15"x8 and had OK 275 60 15 tires and though man there are really close to my other two Americans I spun them around to see if I could tell what lug patten and they were marked American Racing LOL I gave the guy $50 for the pair .
Two years ago there I saw a pair marked 14x6" $150 and at the end of the day on the way out i was like hmmm would be good for a trailer I had . threw a tape on the lugs and they were ford but while I had the tape out I found they were 15" and I got them for $75 :) And no I did not tell him they were 15" I bet he had 500 people walk up and look at them and walk away . He told likely a 100 guys they were 14 " was kind of snotty when they asked .

Fact is most guys did not have Aemricans when was a kid in the 70's most were a look a like were I lived . lot of American caps though .

I put these on a shelf i put up last weekend there pairs half are copies half are real. I can't tell what's what with out pulling them down .
The ones with the caps are the americans with ET caps . 20241019_151152.jpg

I'll show Dick a picture next time I go out to his shop. If they are ETs, he'll know. Even if they aren't, he'll probably know what they are.

Two piece ETs are normally marked ET II by a lug hole...and have the ET washer setup.

  22. Keystone even made a rim like that

  23. One year a few of us Buffaloians went to Rochester for a swap meet, one of our guys was looking at a set of 4 torque thrust style rims, two like these and the other two all aluminum.
Later he went back and negotiated a deal on the two aluminum ones, when he was unloading them back in Buffalo he realizes he grabbed one of each style.
You'd think he would've noticed one being heavier than the other.

They did, I had some, and that'd be my guess to the manufacturer of these.

  25. Rocket Racing and Mickey Thompson also made a 2 piece wheel like this but the screw spacing for the center cap is wider on the Mickey Thompson.

I had a set like that in 14". They were on an old beater Mercury comet I had. I took them off when I did the brakes and after cleaning them up really good, they looked nice, but I could not find any brand name on them. The center caps were chrome with no name, and I assumed they were knock offs.
