Hello again fellas! I have come to the hamb for advice in the past and have not been let down! So that's why I write again. My powerglide I believe, has taken a ****. I have followed all advice given to me on here, and done all adjustments on shop manual. Still no luck... I believe I'm gonna have to rebuild it, but the shop wants 1200 or more to do the job,and times are tough and money is kinda tight. So I was wondering if anyone out there could cut me a break. I'm not saying for free or anything. But maybe somekind of deal?!? I would appreciate any input on the subject. Thanks again fellas!

i'm a little to far away to help, and i have yet to rebuild an auto trans, but i see you can buy a rebuild kit for $150 and a how to rebuild a powerglide book for $15, thats my advice, how hard can it be, i'd give it a shot, if i got stuck i'd take a few pics and post them here, go for it.

You'll need a few specialized tools to rebuild one - snap ring pliers, clutch spring compressor, etc. You may or may not be able to rent them from your local parts house.

If this is in a 54 and is the original transmission (I'm guessing from your username here) then you've got a cast iron version, which has it's own nuances. There are guys who specialize in those; I wouldn't advise you to attempt a cast iron PG as your first auto trans rebuild.

I have a working one that I will sell you cheap! I'm in Ohio so you would have to work out a relay or pay some fat shipping as this thing is heavy!

Yeah man, it's a cast iron closed driveshaft model from my 52. I even have the adapter plate, flywheel, and torque convertor. Shoot me a PM if you are interested.

Contact Tim Deal @ Tim Deal's Transmissions, his shop is in Huntington Beach, Ca. He does good work for a fair price.

  8. Hey there black n blue54...Whats your problem anyway? My cast iron powerglide recently went haywire and wouldnt shift outta first. turns out it was the nylon governor gear had worn thru and broken...easy fix, (hard to find the part) I,ve also heard of these problems from this governor getting dirty and needing to be cleaned.. so I ask again; Whats your problem? This is definately the place to find the help!!!

You'll need a '53-'54 trans. The '50-'52 Powerglide isn't much better than an early Dynaflow.

  10. i'm just off the other end of the 105.
    my shop loves old transmissions!

In california it shouldn't be that hard to find a good working used PG for a couple few hundred bucks.

I've seen people trying to give them away at times.

The problem it has is that it only has low gear and if I put it in drive,it just keeps windin up and second never shoots it. It all started after my 235 6cyl got rebuilt.thanx for the help

  13. Yeah that sounds like the problem (governer or nylon governor gear). heres what to do.
Theres a cover with 4 bolts on the drivers rear side of the trans you have to remove. Save the fluid cleanly because you don't want to put new fluid back in an old transmission. I had to unbolt my transmount and drop the trans some to get enough acess room to pull the governor out. It's shaped like a "t" if the gear is junk it will be obvious, otherwise I've been told that these get dirty and clog up and may need to be cleaned.
It's the fluid flow thru this piece that controls the 1-2 shift.
Now I found that finding this nylon gear on ebay was nearly impossible and cost me well over 20-30 bucks. then I had to use a press to press it on.
Calling around I had found a trans part place that would of sold me the gear for $40 or an entire governor for $80. I might go that route next time. Pull the gov, inspect it, dont damage it and keep it clean. You might want to call that alteredpilot guy who posted earlier, as finding guys who are familiar with a cast iron powerglide is like finding good help at a modern parts store. Just do your homework first and see if the problem is staring you in the face before you fork up your wallet to anyone. Heres a picture of the box mine came in, which I think shows the G.m. part number. Good luck and Godspeed.....Or two speed.....at least....
