can you build a Custom of an old Mercedes coupe???

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Norrland, Oct 12, 2005.

  1. There is a guy who lives a couple of house from me that has a 1969 MB coupe that he wants to sell for 5000 swedish crowns (around 650$).
I think that it could be a nice daily driver with some work(hate the taillights). Any toughts about that? ( the pics is not on that car but it has the same color)

Considering where you live, sure, why not! The car has decent body lines and it's a hardtop...draw up a few changes and see how you'd like it...or photoshop it...as a daily driver where's the harm?

Here in the US you'd probably be ostracized for doing something like that cuz American cars rule...

    ummm, no.

Sorry, I still don't dig it. It's probably a decent car, not custom material tho.

I think it could be real cool, just don't try to do all the 50's custom tricks on that new of a car. Cleaned up body, lowered, with the stock caps and tires on it, would look real nice.

I (secretly) have a '73 MB 220 Diesel that I want to do something custom with. It would look stupid to put wide whitewalls on it or flat black, but a trim shave and a lowering looks good on anything. My plan was to do a quickie two-tone paint job along the lines of the 70's Rolls Royce, where they just do the sides of the car broken up with a pinstripe. Real classy-like.

Chop it. Lower it a couple of inches. Get rid of that ugly rubber side molding, but keep the crease in the body. Change out the tail lights (maybe some 67 GTO style tail lights). Ditch the grille--maybe a full-width tube style?

I don't have photoshop. Anybody want to try those mods on the pics above?

  8. you can build a nice cruiser with ease, drop it, shave it, paint it and drive it.
I have a great pic of a street racer merc (same model) but it won't load in for some reason. check out www.americanv8.co.uk and then go to the diary page, then frankie and bennys (june 11th) the pic is there, go a bit further down and you see me playing silly buggers in the car park just before the police showed up!!!

No. Make it pro touring though, and you'll have something.

  11. Im thinking!

Lowering it and put some astros, raidir or crome reverse. change the taillight for maybe frenched 60-65 impala taillights, tubegrill and some round lights in the front, remove handles and trim and paint it purple with silver flaked roof or lambourgini Orange pearl with some nice light grey metallic on the roof?

I think, if you have to ask, then NO.

but i do think that YOU can, if you think you can.

Personally I would love a customized mercedes coupe, even better if it was diesel so it could run BIO-Diesel! Just clean it up, finish up where the factory left off, put some decent taillghts on, shave it, clean it up, a 2 tone would be pretty neat too! yeah, YOU can bulid a custom out of a mercedes!

  14. I don't know but if you're Bruce Crower you can make an ugly as shit ant-eater lookin' red roadster and hang a fonky Mercedes grill on it

I wouldn't changethe headlights, maybe just french them a little. Plus I think if you go to round headlights and tailights, you'll be trying to mix incongruent styles. The merc is pretty boxy as it is; I'd work with that boxyness. Make everything clean and straight. That's why I like the GTO taillights (I was mistaken with the year. 66 would work beautifully, not 67. See pic). Also, I think you're on the right track with the tube grille. Notice the Merc has a little lip under the edge of the hood, almost like a grille was meant to go from headlight to headlight. And you could bump out the center section of that tube grille to match up with the similar section on the hood that used to match up with the stock grille (think of the way the stock grille bars on a 48-53 Chevy pickup bump out in the middle, and I think you'll be going in the right direction). I agree with the idea of the shave and a haircut. I would keep the color subtle, but that's probably just my preference...

  16. Your right wannabewannabe!

The GTO lights really look good. I will go check out the Mercedes tomorrow and take some pics on it and go home and cut and glue so i could see what it would look like...

I think the key for the Merc is to keep it relatively subtle. Think of the best rods. They're almost always the ones where the mods are extensive but subtle. All you want to do is keep looking at the car to see if you can find everything that has been done (or not done). Plus if you're anything like me, I find it's easier to get tired of a radically done car if you use it on a daily basis.

Also, I'd shy away from the bellflower look on this car. It'd almost seem like you were a wannabe using daddy's car. I should know, it's my namesake...

  18. A can only agree with that daddys car and bellflower thing! But what kind of wheels should fit on this ride you think?

    15" wheels right?

66 Olds Toronado caps with skinny whites, or if you with a dark exterior color and maybe a red interior, red line tires might complement nicely. They may not work because of the weirdo offset of toro wheels, but I think the general design works with the Merc.

I say that you can build a custom from damn near anything. I built one from a Volvo 240:

OK good point, BUT mine also has round taillights out of an old BMW 2002. Shaved door handles, airbags, flamethrowers, and a Toyota supercharger.

  23. I had a Volvo 264 from 1975 with a Chevy 327 (350 hp) and th 350 automatic for about 10 years ago. It was a cool ride cause it dident look so much from the outside and i only had black tinted glas and black paint (not flatblack) on it and some wide steel rims with some doggy dishes on it and i was lowered 4-5 inches

Below is a '56 Lincoln that was customized using a Mercedes grill shell, and some Lucas driving lights in front and a bubble top and custom interior, the text says the car was channelled 5", and a Junior's House of Color paint job. I'm posting it to show there is history of that Mercedes grill in customs. this was in the July 1965 Car Craft one page after Dick Landy's Landy's Dodge Hemi-Charger Dodge altered wheelbase 138.2 mph in I think the first or one of the first full cover "foldouts" in the magazine.
The hubcaps you have on that Mercedes were the hot item around here 15-20 years ago on Mini-Trucks. another built-in custom item, if not on that car, for another car.
My point is you could customize that Mercedes with some '69± era Lincoln, Cadillac or other luxury car pieces like the car pictured was customized using the Mercedes grill and British Lucas driving lights.
Just don't go completely retro to the '56 kind of stuff or it will end up looking like those wannabe-customs 80's Tbirds with the 49 Ford fiberglass end kits glued on them.
