I've been wanting a benz coupe for a while. I prefer the older ones, from the late 60's -early 70's, but they seem to be at a premium. Anyhow, I want one to drop a caddy 500 in one. I want a kraut-kar that will smoke them at will. I found a 69 once, but all the windows were busted out, and it had been the only one I had ever seen in WVa, so I passed.

  2. I also used to associate it that way myself, until I bought my Mark and then started gathering as much info as possible. When the Continental project started it was intended to be a completely separate division. Not built to compete with GM's Cadillac but to build the American Rolls Royce. Ford lost its ass on these but it wasn't killed off by the bean counters, but the knowledge that as the company once again went public in 57 that the new stockholders wouldn't tolerate the loss. Profits won out over image building. My guess is that they were sold and serviced by the L/M dealers, but marketing of these was unique in that rather than waiting for the select few that could afford a $12K car in 56-7 to come look one over the marketing team put together a hardbound sales book that was sent out to the target audience as an invitation to experience the Continental. Quite a departure from Henry's car for the masses. Nowhere in all the literature that I have gathered is there any reference to Lincoln.

Amazingly enough if you can believe this, This is as grand a car as was factory built with every conceivable bell and whistle available in the mid 50s yet the one and only option on these cars was air-conditioning. Hard to believe that a car that was to set the standard for luxury would be built without air. Can't believe that the boys at Cadillac would have made that mistake.

Sorry, but I think both of those Cars look horrible.

Here is another retro looking attempt by Eberhard Schulz.

Also Benz powered ( 2 V8's ), and at least as ugly as the 600 based one.

He designed a mid engined gullwing Mercedes too, which looked better but not nearly as good as Mercedes own version, the C-111

  6. That gray one looks like it started out as a VW bug.

  7. where's zibo on this one? hes customized a few mercadies in his day. choped a couple ok only one... up too!

  8. Ugh, I dunno they all just leave me cold. Blow a million bucks, buy a Gullwing Mercedes and paint it silver flake with candy red flames. Drop in a tough BBC and go have some fun. Doesn't someone make glass re-pops of them?? There you go. problem solved.

I saw one of these old Merc coupes at a car show recently. From a distance I first thought it was a 64-65 Chevelle hardtop since they have similar profiles. I thought at first it was a customized Cheby, but as I got closer I recognized it.

It had all the side trim shaved, a set of torque thrust mags, and a small block Ford in it. It actually looked pretty nice and had kind of a musclecar look...not like a german car, if you know what I mean. Different, but good different.

It's been a fantasy of mine to build an earlier style 220SE (?) big 4 seater 2 door hardtop with huge fat rubber and wide fender flares and slammed to the ground, kinda like Can Am car.

There is a later sport coupe 2 seater, like a '73 in my neighborhood that's sitting neglected, it's got wire wheels and the bumpers are missing. I can imagine that thing all shaved and maybe with 6 frenched round tailights.

I told the idea to my daughter, she says, "ugh, gross."

  15. I like the lines of it, but in the good ol US of A German mechanics are hard to find, at least in central MO.

cut out the rear end, it is a swing axle indy,
the engine is probably a 6 but its an overhead cam,
if its an 8 than it is perfect running gear for your rpu project

OK not a coupe... in fact it started as a four door...and a slighlty differnt year, but a Custom for sure. This one used to be solid black. Grille is from an Edsel. Very creative custom from Sweden... I love the Chrome tape on the roof and trunk

Yeah, I'm pretty sure he painted that.

I'd like to see more pics of that car...

  24. Why not? There is some dude out in CA making a "32 Mercedes" it has a sectioned grill from that car and the Merc V-12. Shave it and drop it a couple inches on bags, and it'll be a great lowrider.

coupe be a cool driver with the 350 installed, but no Custom.. More of a HotRod/ street machine.

We have a local guy with one of those that has a hotrodded Mercedes motor making big HP, 14" wide rear tires and the rest of the body is stock.. its not bad..

Keep it subtle! Shave, drop, low profiles with altered wheel covers to fit an 18" steel wheel. A nice clean sled. Please don't go "nifty fifties" -stick

  29. I had a Mercedes coupe in the nineties and it was Chevy powered.
Very tight engine compartment and the problem is routing the steering. I finally used a Dakota rack. No frame. so you have to watch structural integrity when you start cutting.
Was really a fun car though.
