We all live in the earth's magnetic field which is strong enough to move a compas needle. So I'm not too sure that magnetism is harmful to us. But let's ***ume it is. You should be able to use a comp*** to see if the magnetism from the welding equipment is stronger than the earth's magnetic field. The farther you move away from a magnetic object, the weaker it gets. I think you'll find that the field is undetectable just a few inches away from the transformer in the welder and almost nonexistant near the leads. Don't take my word for it. Test it yourself.

Thanks for sharing the update 55T. It is very enlightening. I agree with the above poster that I would probably p*** on the last test.

Then I would find a willing younger generation hot rodder that in exchange for my equipment, would be willing to weld anything I needed for the rest of my hot rod building life.

Take care of yourself and good luck.

  5. good to hear you're getting some answers, and glad to see you thought enough to update.........sounds like you're a candidate to become proficient at the long lost art of gas welding sheetmetal...not many can do that anymore these days you might find a nich..get into leading to,,,one door closes- one door opens

Edit: A gas axe also removes the need for a plasma cutter.

Perhaps throw a lead blanket used for X-Rays and such over the welder to shield you a little better from the magnetic field? Just a thought, not sure if it would work or not....

few guys told me to get a lead vest where can you buy such a device and wouldnt they be expensive since it is a medical device? i wonder if this would work best if i wore the vest and maybe put another on the machine. i dont know it seems like a bit of a h***le, my friend just left the garage he did all the welding tonight for me which is great. boy was i anxious all day to get some work done on this exhaust but i held out and waited for friend to show up.

I guess you never realize certain things that are given off by equipment whether its noise or magnetics or anything. I think id call miller tech to see if you can shield the machine somehow.

Just a thought that maybe has been voiced already. Maybe it is your machine itself. Have you tried another MIG to see if the same thing happens?

I would check around with any medical supply store, they may sell something like that. The lead "aprons" they use at a dentist office would be perfect to d**** over your welder...if you do that, just make sure the fans arent blocked or you will overheat the welder and it wont work til it cools back down.
