Hot Rods Can you pre-fill a carburetor to avoid long cranking?

    This !!!!

When my 77 1 ton with a 454 vapor locked due to an exhaust leak blowing on the fuel line I poured gas in the vent tube of the carb and made it about half a mile 100 yards at a time by filling the vent tube and firing it up and going until it ran out of gas and repeat while pulling a 25 foot boat. I'd blown he donut between the manifold and head pipe out.

That is also how I ran this Cad 500 for a short time.

I bought three or so of these squirty bottles:

Got them on eBay from a lab supply place, cost peanuts. They are OK to store gas in without melting. I have one full of water, which is handy for slooshing away coolant when I slop it into the engine bay, and for wetting down small stuff as I clean it. Another one I keep full of gas, topped up from the mower fuel tin. I use a small rubber cap over the end of the squirty nozzle to stop the gas evaporating in our 110F summers. The gas bottle is handy for cleaning small things, and also really handy for giving a squirt of fuel down the throat of a carb to get an engine running.

    Cheers,

The chlorinates solvents that cause this have been banned from consumer products in Europe for about 25 years. I would hope they have been handled similarly in other places as well.

Since we are here now, I'll relate this.
I was brought up cleaning brakes with starting fluid.
Not that it's good, but it's not as bad as that.

Could be worse. We always used gasoline to clean everything.

Carter has one electric fuel pump that is the flow thru when not used. It's listed in my Carter Fuel Pump Catalog as Recreational Vehicle and Off Road Boost Pump, part number P4602RV. I think Rock Auto has them.

Normsl driving around no. In my case engine would run out top end of third gear, if I turned the pump on before hand no problem. If remembered. I put a micro switch in gas linkage to turn pump on at 1/2 thottle. A one way bypass valve can be put parallel with electric pump which work just as well for priming and normal driving.

You can definitely pre-fill the bowls, but whether or not your engine will start by just doing that depends on the combo. Stock and mild setups will likely light right off. More aggressive setups may need a little help. I run an in-tank electric pump on my 55, so my bowls fill before I ever start cranking. But my engine wants a lot of fuel to start, it will not start without pumping the gas 5-8 times depending on the temperature. It then lights off on a half a crank. No choke (holley street hp carb), and the engine idles and runs fantastic otherwise. So it's not just about filling the bowls, but making sure the engine has something to burn being pulled into the cylinders when you crank.
