This is some pics off E-bay, but this is a catalog I had in youth. It is from the House of Jomil, a custom paint shop that use to be in Winston Salem, N.C. We got to know him when he put a multiple coat lacquer job on my Dads 55 Chevy. I remember going to the shop and seeing a lot of cars in the middle of these paint jobs. I didnt realize at the time he was using spray bombs on some of his custom work. I used the catalog to paint my models with back then. And the catalog had some neat covers to it. The guy last I heard was in Taylorsville N.C. and got arrested for molesting kids! Hope the pics do good , they were small. Anybody else here of that guy?

HappyHoppy listed a Riviera with spiderweb paint on the 1st page of this thread. When I started auto body shop in 1974 we put the un-thinned laquer in the gun, started spraying at 30 psi. and we were custom painters! woo-hoo. Does anybody know if you can duplicate that simple technique with modern paints?

Well, on that job Dave would drop it off, then I'd do some work on it. When I'd get to a good stopping point (clear usually) he'd pick it up and drive it home. It got a few real good days of sun before I'd see it again, then he would drive it by and drop it off for more work.

If you don't have a heat make-up on your booth, give the clear a few days in a warm place to harden. It'll sand MUCH better the dryer it is. Watch your panel gaps and MAKE SURE everything is sanded thoroughly before top coating, read the paint can, say your prayers, be kind to animals etc etc.

It was good finally meeting you at that thing the other day Rocky! That was a fine Cadillac to start with.

Conder, Monico were talking about the artwork you did for him years ago in trade for him helping you out with your Chevy... He still has the piece up on his office wall... still looks good!

As usual, Monico has a badass car. As usual, Rod Powell painted it. The Aldape family has inspired me ever since I met them. Monico's nephew Manuel introduced me to Rod..I didn't have any money and didn't know anything and they didn't care!

...plus, after they put a crank kit in my '55 (in one day!) that car ran perfect the whole time I owned it. Good mojo that.

    How was this done?
Maybe a gold basecoat, some other darker colors for the scales and then a candy red over the top? How do you get the pattern lined up so well?

Yep, that's right. "High build" clear these days is as easy to spray as anything else. If you spray the stuff with very little reducer and wait the recommended time between coats, it makes it pretty safe to sand your top coated art to dead flat, without sanding through it. Plus, (if it's applied right) you can increase the size of your whole car by 25%!!!
