Can anyone tell me whats going on with Canfield heads?.I reciently returned a pair of new heads that failed when my engine was dynoed. Appartently they are selling heads that have not been heat treated.I sent them back and they refuse to discuss it with me or return my money. They are in the do nothing mode, i.e . "screw the customer". Any one know how i can contact the ohio state attorney general, consumer protection, better business bureau, the owner of the company?. their web site email address to contact and bitch does not work as listed.Any one else have this problem or know someone who had heads fail? HELP!!!! Any info. will be greatly apperciated.
That's crazy, my buddy sells a lot of their heads (I bought mine from him) and they've been nothing but nice. I even wanted "custom" castings, and they did it for me at no extra charge. I just had to wait until they had some "down time" at the foundry to get to it. (They have several different port sizes and styles, as well as chamber shapes and sizes. I also had them drill different valve stem diameters so I could use some cut-down used Ti NASCAR valves. They pretty much let me mix-and-match to get a fully "custom" casting for no extra charge. It seems unlike them to be "dissing" you. I'll ask my buddy if he know what's up and/or if there's a good way for you to get in touch with someone "important" over there at Canfield. I haven't talked to him for some time, but I'll give him a shout.
I work about a half an hour from Canfield. I never knew Canfield heads existed. Go to the Ohio goverment website to reach the attorney general. That stinks ! Sounds to me like they are going out of business if your not getting any response at all. If there's anything I can do give me a yell. here's some websites, Guys, I think if we all get together and start sending emails to this place alittle peer presser will help him out. Lakes... Please call them and get an email from them so that we can give them hell! ohio gov canfield heads CANFIELD CYLINDER HEADS 580 West Main Street Canfield, Ohio 44406 Sales and Technical Support: 330-533-7092 Fax: 330-533-7063 For serious inquiries please contact John Fenton
Can you give details as to what "failed" means? You mentioned that the castings were not heat treated. How did you determine this and what led you to this as the root cause of the failure? Need more info please. I'm not trying to bag on you, but as a metallurgical engineer, I could help you out possibly. I need better description of what happened before and after, then I can try to offer any advice.
I live about 10-12 minutes from Canfield. so, if it comes to a personnal visit....let me know! I go by thier shop couple times a week.
38Chevy454: Thanks for the reply. After the dyno tune, they checked the compresson in each cyl. and found a low one , i.e 30-40 lbs lower than the others. They pulled the heads and found that the low cyl. has the valve seats sinking into the alum. and putting a bulge in the bowl area below the valve. Upon checking the other valve seats, they found more of them were sinking into the head. This kinda confermed the problems they were having when installing the screw-in rocker are studs. They were pulling the threads out at 32 ft lbs of torque. They heli coiled all the stud threads, and thought it just might be an anomely, so we put the heads on and ran it on the dyno. Once the heads were torn down , i took them to a testing lab that's been certified by the aero space industry. They do heat treating as well as testing. They do a lot of work for Boeing. To do a comparison, i took one of the engine shops wasted Brodex heads along. They did a "brinel" test to verify what we thought. The Brodex tested at 97, while the Canfields were 42 & 43. They certified their test, and that the Canfields were not heat treated. They also said that to heat treat now would not be cost effective, as the heads will change dimensionaly and would have to be all remachined. That would be after the valve guides and valve seats were removed . I didn't pay good money for re-manufactured heads. So far they have not responded once they got the heads back. They were real pissy when i called before i sent them back. When i mentioned that they were soft and maybe not heat treated, the first thing out of their mouth was that what i said was "Bullshit". That has kinda set the tone for my letter to them.Guess they didn't like my list of options to resolve the issue. Have any ideas guys?. Thanks for all the response and i'll get back to all of you.
Anyone else on here run Canfield heads? If so help the man out and send them an e-mail or letter stating that you know of a set of heads that was not properly heat treated and want to know if your heads are from the same lot. From personal experience I know that most shops do not do their own heat treating. I DO NOT know if this is the case w/ Canfield Heads. I live about an hour and a half away and I wouldn't mind taking a shop tour "As a potential customer I'd like to see their operation since it is almost in my backyard and I was a machinist and now a quality engineer" and then pop up a few heat treating questions once I was inside the door. They have been around for awhile and this is the first that I've heard anything negative about them. Maybe they are trying to resolve issues behind closed doors but the least they could do was let you know that much.
