Looks like great weather for Fall Canfield swap meet this weekend at Mahoning County Fairgrounds in Canfield Ohio. I'll be inside the hay grain building Saturday AM (have to work Friday) Should be a sell out. This one the only event I attend that gets better (in sales) every year...who's goin?
Dave Sounds great...I'll be in the same building & same spot as usual....talking to Dave and Ed people they are getting deluged with calls for spots (probably due to nice weather for a change) so it should be packed with vendors. How was Thompson G***er meet last week? Rain as usual?
We'll be making the 300 mile trek from central MD. Spoiled by living 1 hour from Carlisle, we enjoy Canfield as a throw-back to what swap meets used to be before on-line auctions. Nice folks intent upon selling stuff at reasonable prices. The largely-original County Fairgrounds are a treat as well. Restrooms are way past due for improvement, but you can't blame Dave & Ed for that. Again, spoiled by Carlisle's incredible facilities. Instead of leaving Friday, we're waiting until 5am Saturday morning and taking my 8th grader along- he's only heard about Canfield in the past- now he gets to see it. Then it's back to work for 2 weeks to rest up for Fall Carlisle and Hershey week. No more tropical storms please.
Aww man, I wanna go. It seems like I always have something else I already promised I would do. I keep hearing about how great it is.
I miss this swap meet. I used to always go when I was younger (originally from the area, living in TX now). Coincidentally though, I'm going to be in town this weekend for my parent's 50th on Friday night, and will be staying at my sisters place while I'm there - literally within walking distance of the fair grounds. Hmmm... I wonder if I could somehow convince my parents that I'm taking them to the swap meet as a 50th wedding anniversary present? ~Bob
OK bob35...here's the scam, PM me with your cell phone number...I'll call you at 9:00 AM Saturday and tell you I am a fellow Hamber that needs help....you tell the parents hey....gotta go, I'll be back as soon as I can...guy in trouble needs my help. Go to Canfield until 2:00 PM or so, if you buy anything drop it at my spot and I will mail it to D/FW on monday when I get home....problem solved
OK, Ohio / Western PA rain all done at 1:00 PM Thursday, smooth and dry for the rest of the weekend !!! Talked to a few vendors setting up today and it's filling up faster than normal. I'll be there bright and early Saturday morning....how about you? Look for the HAMB banner on the hay grain building, I'm right inside the door.
I will be leaving at the crack of am of friday. Got spot 929 near Sub World. Looks like the weather will be OK no rain but a little cool. I'll take the cool weather any day I've been there before and seen snow flurries at the fall meet. If you're there friday or saturday stop in and say hi.
The last Canfield ****ed big time. I am not sure if I want to waste another weekend day on it again. Maybe I will try it again next year. Randolph ****ed worse though.
Agreed. Unless you are fixing up a K-5 Blazer or a 2nd Gen Camaro it's often a waste of a day. Not too many cool old car parts, though if you do come across something it could be a deal.
That's pretty awesome Thanks for the offer, but I think I'm going to have to stick it out and be the good son ~Bob
Ya know I get a charge out of of you guys, and don;t take this wrong as everyone has an opinion. I don;t disagree that it is tough finding decent traditional parts at many swap meets including Canfield....but you have to look. If you guys think stuff is going to fall off a vendors tailgate just as you walk past....it ain't you have to look. I am a vendor (probably not of anything you would be interested in and that is fine) and I see more and more "car related events" getting jammed up with sungl***, diecast, lawnmaowers and the like. Some feel even my items (car movies and drag racing videos) don;t have a place at a swap meet. But the "last event that ****ed" I was able to walk around after I closed up about 1:00 PM Sunday. I bought 2 decent Superior Metal flake Steering wheels with horn kits for $35 each....a pair of 15X6 on 4.5 Chrome reversed wheels for $50 and a Dixco tach for $25 AND THAT WAS AFTER THE STUFF WAS SITTING THERE FOR 2 1/2 days an more than 1/2 the vendors were packed and gone. So maybe it's time you looked past the K5 blazer parts and second generation camaro stuff that agreeably is often overpriced for a bent up worn used than a repop new is going for....you may find something to change your mind....or then again maybe not....
Oh, I agree wholeheartedly. And I have been a vendor in the past. It's simple - eBay and like the like have taken a large chunk out of swap meets, just like flea markets and yard sales. But there are deals to be found if you overlook a lot of junk (some of it which was mine!).
Sorry for goin off on you there Hillbilly. I guess I get carried away when I think about how good the swap meets were 20 years ago verses how they are now. I guess I don;t blame people for going to the internet to sell the good stuff. With the cost of selling at events rising every year, less people going cause money is tight. Then you throw the fact that for less money and effort you can sit at home and 25,000 + people will see what you have to sell verses 2500...can't say I blame vendors for doing what they do.
Great weather. Nice people. Some great buys. Check out the future HAMB'er who tagged along with me. Sorry about the blurry cell-phone pic.
