The 2 tone axle looks cool, did you basecoat the 2 colours then clear the whole thing ???

Just finished up repainting some parts. This urethane does not like these temps. 45 in the shop and 38 outside and is expected to drop below freezing tonight. That's it, I'm moving south.

  12. wow, I had flip flops on today. Seriously. It was a little chilly, but shit, ya'll are fuckin crazy up there!

  13. Still watchin' this thread and unbelievably, it gets better with every update! Awesome work - awesome car!
Insert two cents here: The glove leather would definitely look good with the colours you're working with, but maybe not so "old school" to those of us with selective memories... The vanilla would be a natural of course, but, might I mess you up by suggesting black? I know it's Florida, but (and you read it here first), I think black's gonna be the new white real soon and you've got some black parts to carry it off. An opinion of course...

    Sweet rod man.

Black will be too hot. I have spent years thinking about how I want the inside to look. I know most people on the site will not like what I'm going to do there. Being a glass body, I feel I must cover it all up. If it were a real body I would keep it very sparse and simple. I'm warning you up front, it's going to be over the top for most peoples taste here. I will do my best not to look like a street rod. There are the usual kit car problems with the electric windows and shaved handles. I have spent weeks working on those darn window openings and making my own handle linkage. As for the electric windows, I'm using the crank handles with the built in switch. I'm doing my best, I swear.
I tried to work on it today but my shop has no insulation and 30 is just too cold for me. The bondo and resin just don't work and forget about painting in this shit. It's not supposed to get this cold here!

  15. I kinda figured that the Florida weather would eliminate the black... It was just a thought. The vanilla is a cool (in both senses of the word) choice.
I covered everything in my glass coupe as well. I thought the '55 T-bird switches for my power windows was in keeping with the theme I aimed for.

...As you said, you gotta be creative!!

The second door is more work than the first. The garnish molding is out of wack. It's edges are too short and must be built up. Once the edges are fixed, they must be blocked level and smoothed. It takes many steps to build, first with glass then fillers. The inside of the door edge must be filled with bondo and sanded level to meet the flat edge of the new molding.

Out of interest whose body are you using ???

To make you feel a little better all the glass body's we have in the U.K. need the same amount of work or quite often more :(

Thanx for posting these pix! I'm facing the same dilema and seeing what you are doing has given me some new ideas. Interesting. Hope the sanding ends for you soon! Gary

The body is from Bad Ass Rods in Georgia. Of the bodies I've looked at, it's somewhere in the middle. Not too bad and not too good.

    Oh ya, it's snowing here!

  29. Hot Turkey,

Your project is wonderful, and your interactions with Shelby are great too.

As you already understand, the choice of "canvas" material upon which to construct your artistic and design vision is essentially irrelevant. I guess a case could be made that if you constructed your coupe out of paper mache it would have real world limitations; however, to make a fuss about whether one uses fiberglass sheet versus metal sheet is patently ridiculous. If Michelangelo had created a bronze sculpture of David, rather than marble, would his vision be less of an accomplishment? Or if Van Gogh had used a wood board rather than a stretched canvas would his work be less important?

In my opinion the fiberglass versus sheet metal argument is a straw man that helps insecure people feel better about themselves. In a nutshell — who cares?

As you may have read in my thread, I’m a big fan of Harry Miller. Your metal sculpture really reminds me of Miller’s work; and as Michelangelo is to sculpture of the human form, Miller is to automotive suspension and running gear sculpture (not body styles). I attached a couple of photos I took at the 2003 Miller Meet held at the Milwaukee Mile. Do the leaf springs and brackets look familiar? You are in great company.

I also like your use of color and detail; my only comment would be that sometimes less is more. I found as my project neared completion it became hard to resist the temptation to guild the lily.

Thanks for sharing your artistry, and keep up the outstanding work.
