I have a 65 c10 with the 230 inline 6 and 3 on the tree. Using what I've learned on this site I've been able to decode some of the numbers on the engine block but not all. Can someone please point me in the right direction to decode the remaining ones? The first question I have is what does CON mean? It's stamped to the left of the block casting date code. To the right of the casting number there's a C. I'm guessing means Chevrolet since the casting number indicates the block could have been used in a variety of GM makes? Below the GM stamp there's a 22 stamped. Anyone know what that means? On the opposite side in the middle of the block there's the partial casting number followed by a 6 which I think indicates that it's a 6 cylinder. To the left of the partial casting number is a 24 stamped. Anyone know what that means? I'm sorry for all of the questions but can't find these answers anywhere. I'm hoping someone here can help since this is where I found the info to decode the other numbers on the block. Thanks. Attached are pictures of the stamps I'm referring to.
the numbers are not stamped, they are cast. the CON I think refers to which conveyor the block was made on in the foundry. The others are also part of the casting process, the meaning seems to be lost to time.
Just FYI... I found on another site that the 22 below the GM mark refers to the mold number used for the casting.
Yep! Original to the truck and that's the most important thing to me. I've seen too many where someone just dropped a 350 into it and changed from manual to auto transmission. This was really built to be a farm work truck 50 yrs ago so it's rough around the edges but 230s are rock solid engines. Another thing I tell people is I'm not too worried about someone stealing it because it's got the manual choke and is a stick shift. Not many people around now know how to start/drive that combo. I had a 72 c10 years ago with a 230 and three on the tree, that truck is probably still running somewhere today too. I missed that old truck but liked the mid-60s body style better which is why I've got the 65 now. Traded the 72 for a 73 Camaro.
