The Merc Monterey 4 door had the big 390 in it in 1963?? What is the stock carb setup for these cars? TIA
I believe that car would have had a 390 stock, yes. The likely carb for it was a Autolite 4 barrel. My same setup on my Galaxie had a ton of power, but it didn't like staying tuned. It also loved fuel. I've since swapped to an aftermarket 4 barrel intake and Quadrajet. I still have both if you are interested in a setup for your car.
What is your engine code? http://www.mercurystuff.com/ BTW this is a good site. I believe there was a 2V 390 also.
Thanks for the info. I'm looking at getting a Merc Monterey for a grocery getter and putt-putt around here...just wanted to know how much KY to bring with to the gas station after I buy it. And I'm interested in that carb set up if I get this ride. Thanks for your help.
If you install an aftermarket aluminum intake you'll get better fuel economy, mainly just by shaving 70 lbs off the front of the car!
could also be a 352 or a 360 maybe, but i think the 352 was common, My 63 ford had one witha autolite 2BBL. JimV
I also have a spare Autolite 4v carb from a 64 Ford 390 if you want it. Probably good for a spare or "parts" carb at least? (I'll be replacing it with a Holley when it comes time to drive this thing!)
that sums it up nicely! yeah, don't worry about what carb it has, it'll get crappy mileage either way.
I gotta disagree here Squirrel. My '62 Galaxie has seen 20mpg pretty consistently the past few years on the highway. It has a 800cfm Quadrajet with pretty big primary jets and secondary rods, Performer RPM intake, stock 3.00 gearing and weighs almost 5000lbs when loaded with all my camping and road trip crap. With the stock Autolite 4 pot carb I would never get above 10mpg.
Cars built in Oakville ( pre auto pact days) could have 352's in them but 360's were a truck motor from later.
My first car was '63 Monterey. I loved the electric rear window you could lower and raise worked great during Dove season, stick a couple guys in the back, lower the window, and blast away Vance
