i have a 63 econoline with an inline 6. the car turns on right away with the choke on. now when the car is warm and i put the choke off it dies. please help this rookie mechanic get this summer project going.
check for vacuum leak! spray some wd-40 around carb base and intake while running. if idle changes you have leak. good luck
Sounds like a vacuum leak. Check the intake manifold bolts are tight and the carb base bolts. Take a can of starting fluid and spray around the carb base and the manifold/block area. If the engine speeds up, you have a leak at that spot. Might be something else but do this first to eliminate this possibility and report back.... Terry
well the car has been sittin for a while but the guy b4 me threw on a new carb. now correct me if i'm wrong but me and my brother both looked and seems like the intake manifold is a cast with head. i see no bolts or any thing. now i did the spraying of starter fluid and i don get much from the sides. but when the choke is off only way to turn it on is if i put the choke on or spray the starter fluid. how ever while the car is running when i spray it, it chokes meaning too much feul. also if i rev the engine it'll keep going but as soon as you take your pedal off its dead. went ahead and did compression test. all cylinders are reading 120-125 pounds except for number 2 which reads 60. that would give me rough idle but not engine shut off. right?
DONT USE STARTING FLUID!!!! Good grief. W-D 40, carb spray, spray bottle with water, etc. Startig fluid will blow your van into an egg shape and singe your eyebrows. Maybe even put the motor in the livingroom. just sayin
