A grave robber is a person who digs up a buried body to steal the things that were buried with it1. They typically target valuable artifacts or personal property found in graves, tombs, or crypts. Grave robbery has occurred throughout history and across various cultures. Here are some notable examples:

    1. Ancient Egypt: Many ancient Egyptian tombs were robbed within a century of their sealing. Even the famous tomb of King Tutankhamen was raided at least twice before its discovery in 19222.

    2. China: Grave robbing in China dates back to antiquity. The presence of valuable items like jade burial suits tempted robbers. In modern times, tomb raiding reached epidemic proportions due to economic reforms and increased demand for Chinese antiquities2.

    3. Mayan Tombs: Graverobbers emptied Mayan tombs before archaeologists could examine their contents3.

    4. Medical Dissection: Some grave robbers steal corpses after burial, especially for medical dissection3.
Grave robbery has caused difficulties for archaeology, art history, and history, as countless precious sites and tombs have been looted before scholars could study them2. It’s a practice that has persisted across different civilizations, driven by greed and the allure of hidden treasures.
