I can agree. I had a $200 56 vette back in the early '70s. it was in very rough condition and many fiberglass repairs on the front clip... six repaints (and it showed all seven colors) but i had a good time with it while I had it. should have kept it.

 

Bitchin. My ratty 59 is an absolute blast to drive. Will I paint it? Probably not

 

I haven't driven my beater 62 since...uh...last night.

Was crazy about them as a teenager, later on the corvette personna turned me off.
I wouldn’t touch a thing on this one. Perfect.

 

Seems most of the "corvette persona" have moved on to the later cars. Mostly.

 

Live axle Corvettes are the most hot rod production cars ever. Lightweight roadster body, obsolete chassis and the best motor you can find. That practically the definition of hot rod.

 

and they're still as much fun to drive as they were 60+ years ago

 

At 12 years old I had my first ride in my cousin's '61. Ruined me for life. Don't have time for the new ones.

 

Would love to have one like that but prices are way higher than I could ever afford.

My 57 has taken me on many adventures over the last 30 plus years.

 

My 56 belonged to my dad, I remember as a kid when he picked me up from school in it I always had a smile from ear to ear.
He’s been gone 34 years now but every time I drive it I can feel him sitting in the passenger seat just like me , the little kid grinning from ear to ear.

 

I started out backwards in the Corvette world, have had two C4’s now have a C3. Maybe I can get a mid year C2 or C1 one of these days….preferably a 66-67 , or a 56-57.

 

I love the first years of Corvettes up to about 1966. At Bonneville this past year there was a a 1953 that was a gasser and a 1966 that was being used as a race car on the flats!!

 

Yep, I grew up in vettes even going to Bloomington several years when I was in grade school. My dad always had vettes and I have now had 6 myself. Anyway, none of mine have been first generation only because I haven’t been able to afford one…yet. I really need a 56 or 57…

 

did I ever tell you about opportunity I had to buy a nice off topic 67 427 4 sp roadster for $2,000 from sticks unlimited on Colorado boulevard??? (I thought it was overpriced.)

that was actually before buying my 56 roller with title from a dealer on Whittier boulevard in 1973 for $200.

 

That’s a great 56 thanks for posting would love to hear the rest of the story. It’s been over 50 years since I’ve heard those duel fours come alive but can remember it like yesterday. I’ve had my eye on a 63 sitting off the frame down to the glass. For the last 15 to 20 years. Talked to the guy years ago he said his painter body guy died and he was kinda stuck. The frame and drive train is all done. Every time I drive by I think about stopping. Probably just be disappointed or divorced and know I can’t afford either.

When referring to Corvette 427's, many times "L88" is the first thing you hear people say, seems to just roll off their tongues.
Kind of like in the non Corvette world when someone is selling an engine....... "It came out of a Corvette".

 

I'm a C2 guy, having bought my first one new back in '67, but I think I can relate. With the C1's, the '56-'57's are the only ones I like; the "lozenges" in the coves , quad headlights, and increasing use of chrome on the '58's and up make me lose interest. That's why I like '67's; they're cleaner than the other C2's.

However, if I had that '56, the red coves would have a very short life.

 

I grew up playing in Dads 57, had a 76 in the 80’s, then a 60 then a real nice 69. While i had the 69 Dad gave me the 57,i had both for a while. What i’ve dreamed of for years tho is a mid year coupe 64-67

At three years old I've been told that I recognized Corvettes over the other makes. Had a '56, '60, '62 but like my mid-year over the early ones. And don't forget, without new vettes there would be no old vettes.

 

I can relate. A few years ago, a friend and I picked up a '67 yellow coupe that had been hit HARD in front from a warehouse in Dallas where it had been sitting for enough years for it to get completely covered in dust and dirt. It was on an open trailer and we couldn't stop for gas or a meal without get swarmed. All the way back to the Twin Cities, people tried to flag us down and get us to pull over. It was unreal.

 

Mid years are my favorite but I don't fit in ANY of them.

 

I'm not a Chevrolet person at all. Having said that, the only Corvette I would ever want would be a '59. I don't even know why.

 

Thanks a lot !!.....now you went and did it. This car is exactly except for model year what I experienced back in 1969-1971. I had a chance to by a 1959 Corvette for $700. It needed the engine gone thru and the transmission overhauled. It was the base 230 hp. 283 with a cast iron Powerglide. I was in between college....Navy ...building dirt track cars.....and wisely back to college. I was working at the local small town Chevrolet dealer. Repairs were fun and easy in my spare time ?? evening. Car was all original driver. Put in new carpet, made soft top fit a little better, tightened up steering. Same color as this car with silver cover....including crack in LF fender that I didn't care about at the time. The car was a traditional hot rod......period.
A 1963 silver split window coupe "builder" was up for sale.....had to have it.....stupid....stupid. Sold my 1959 to finance the 1963.....stupid....stupid. Got smart..... after rebuild traded 1963 for 1966 Impala 396 and 250 Yamaha. Yamaha almost killed me....used Impala as my back to school college car.
I really miss the 59 Vette and really miss the girl I had the first date with in the car.....oh well. Have fun.

That '56 is perfectly done. Needs absolutely nothing other than driven & enjoyed.
As a 74 yr old geezer I can attest running our '62 through the gears (mildly) more fun than sex. Wait, have forgotten what the 2nd part of that comparison was about!
