OK...I read it at the newsstand....Mostly for the humor. This month they have an article/interview with Jesse James. (I still think he is the real deal). Here is a quote from the article....(writer asks).."so who do you build bikes for?"....jesses answer?..."Assholes".... Then he goes on to say he builds bikes for drug dealers, etc....and he is asked.."How do you know they are drug dealers?....his answer?..."They pay in fives" Could Jesse still have the time to run for president????...he's got my vote.
The Autozone commercial cheapened his image a little, but I still think he's pretty cool! If nothing else, he's given today's kids (my niece and nephew included!) a cooler role model than Britney Spears, Garth Brooks or Michael Jackson!!!
I don't blame the guy for takin AutoZone's money. You can call it sellin out if you want but, given the opportunity, 99% of us would do the same thing. More power to him for makin some big bucks. It's great to see a cool primered kustom on a national ad. It's primer power at it's best
JJ's 54 is actually painted satin finish not primer, and it is clean not like most ratty beaters. yes he is a sell out but wouldn't anyone else getting offered so much
I didn't read it, but thats funny. I agree, i think he's the real deal as well. He may have 'sold out', but you have to get to that point somehow. I honestly think it was his skill's and luck combined. I would probably be doing the same thing if i was in his shoe's. Why not..It's not everyday a person has those kind of opportunities in life. Have fun and if ya can make money at it..bonus. And i dig those autozone commercials too, mainly because of his '54. That car is one of the reasons i decided to build my '53.. Rat..
See the killer cafe bike he built for "Honda America", on the cover of the Feb.'04 Cycle World?,(for a "supposed" $250,000),...pretty tuff,
He does have alot of talent, and some real killer rides. Is he a sell out? I think he is, but I sure as hell would be too, because no matter what anyone says, money can buy my happiness.
I'm not sure how exactly Jesse James has "sold out"... It's not like he was some political rocker who's entire musical message was RAGEing AGAINST the mainstream and corporate America and then signing to Sony records for big money. The dude builds bikes. By hand. And damn nice bikes at that. What ideal did he ever "sell out" on??? He started a BUSINESS, and I seriously doubt he did it to raise political awareness or make a statement... He did it to build bikes and to make money, and he does both. Very well. I suppose Harley Davidson has sold out because they sell bikes to Yuppies, right?
I would love to have the chance to "sell out"....then take the money and go home....and get back to building what I want. Selling out is only temporary.
Lighten up Tragic....its just a term used when people are jealous of someones success (usually someone they idolize)...or that idol going "mainstream".....it's what EVERYBODY does when they get the chance....except maybe in Ken Howards case....he hated the world.
Sorry if it came off like I was taking it personally. I don't. It's just that I see it all the time here on the HAMB, and I hear it all the time when I'm talking to people about bikes. I just never understand it. We should all remember that he was doing his thing the way he does it and the world came to him. He didn't change what he was doing in order to find mainstream acceptance. I suppose there's a certain part of us that needs/wants for the things we think are cool to remain our own. And as soon as the rest of the world jumps in on our "thing", whatever it may be, it's probably natural to resent it...
Hey! That guy cut a Woody car up to make a hot dog cart. I haven't been able to stomach him ever since. And the way they all yell at each other, they'd be thrown right out of the garage. Also, they might build some OK stuff, but they always get their hats cross threaded. I know, I know a cross thread is a TIGHT thread
I have nothing against selling out. That said, I think it's all about timing and style... Example: Sting, U2, and JJ - In my opinion, they are all... ummmm... dorks. The Ramones, Sid V, Johnny Cash, J. Depp, etc... Selling out without loosing yourself. I believe it was Alan Iverson's mother who said, "It's all about keeping it real. That's what I'm doing yo - I'm keeping it real." If ya don't get the joke now, I give up.

excatly what one of you said "the world came to him, he didnt go looking for it". I would jump at the chance he has been givin. and the commercial rocks, I love watching that car cruise and let sparks fly.
I like that article. The commercial surprised me. It was really bitchin and I would love to shop at an AutoZone store that was cool and capable enough for JJ... but all the ones around me are populated with incompetant idiots that only know how to scan the price code and punch computer buttons. Everyone has experienced the what size engine to buy a brake pad, but get this. My last trip to AutoZone, about 3 months ago, all I needed was oil dry, cause I fucked up and made a huge mess. It was late... The guy in the back had no idea what I was talking about. I wrote a letter telling AutoZone how effective their commercials are to communicate to the gearhead population but if they are going make those "gearhead" claims, they better plan some employee education seminars...
I would have no problem with my kids wanting to be like Jesse. I DO have a problem with what MTV is teaching our youth....glamorizing gangstas...abusing women....no work in life, all play,....excess in alcahol...etc etc etc......at least Jesse is creative and can actually do something special with his hands..(other than make gang signs)...so I say, let him have his time in the sun, and take the money and run.
