My Brother in law lives in Redding so I watch the news several time a day. I have seen a few classic car hulks in the background. Redding must have large car culture population

As a former wild land fire fighter when I worked for the park service. You can not outrun the fire , so when they say get out. You should already be gone.
You can replace stuff, but people die because of stuff.

Ouch, that is definitely a painful pic to look at. Hopefully, no lives were lost there....

My heart really goes out to these people. In 1971 I was just out of the service, with a Wife, and a new born Son.
We came home to find our home burnt to the ground, I can't begin to tell you guys how horrable this is. You don't
have a tooth brush to brush your teeth, or a pillow to lay your head on. If you can help these folks, do it.....

    Hello,

It does seem like fires happen in this Redding area almost every year. Wildfires in California, Northern or Southern, are always an aspect of its colorful history. They are a constant reminder to be safe and be ready. An evacuation plan is utmost in preparation plans.

Back in 1999 we were on the road from So Cal, going to and from Portland, Washington and the other parts of the Pacific Northwest. The straightest route goes through California as the I-5 Freeway. We were driving a long distance and it just so happens that Redding was on our pit stop for gas and an overnight sleepover. But, finding a hotel/motel room was difficult because the little town was overrun with firefighters of all kinds and from all places. There were a few units from So Cal up there helping out their brothers in arms, locally.

We were able to find one last place that had a room left. Two people in a small, single twin was not the optimum, but from past experiences, it would do in this circumstance. Besides, the next morning, we were able to eat at the world famous Black Bear Diner with those cute black bears in the gift shop. There was great food and plenty of old hot rod/mild custom trucks in the parking lot. After all, it is in a working, forested area and nearby, the fire was nearby.

The firefighters that were on the “rotating, rest shift” came in to the restaurant and were treated like gods…they were.

Yes, California has its wild fires all over, but, who knows how they start. Sometimes the fire marshals find out (a kid started the recent Laguna Beach/Aliso fire) and other times, it was an act of nature. They are devastating and with preparation plus following commands, definitely, are the order of the day.

We know about fires since last summer, one crept up a block away from us that started in Camp Pendleton (yearly). The Santa Barbara /Carpenteria hot rod guys/families had a terrible one or more that were devastating last year. So, good luck to all in the “zone” and get out safe.

Living out West, you get used to reading about these maladies that strike all of California. They are intimidating, but, that is just part of living. Other parts of the country have hurricanes, massive snow storms, tornadoes, and power grid outages. They are all disheartening. It looks like it is "US vs. Nature" or something that is trying to equalize the situation.

After going through the Yarnell Hill Fire, I hope the owner has all the I's dotted and the T's crossed with his insurance company. From experience I know they will wiggle their way out of paying!

I think if I lived in a fire zone I would build a brick garage with a metal roof and clear everything away from it. my brother lives out in the middle of nowhere, the fire two years ago came pretty close to his 140 year old house and barn. he has sheep on his property to keep the brush down to a minimum, and the house and barn both have steel roofs. he says that is the only reason his place is still there as over time 95% of the old buildings in his area has burned to the ground
