  2. Very sad indeed. Hopefully all escaped o.k.! I was watching the network news or possibly CNN the other night and the reporter was standing in the road by some burnt out homes, in the back ground you could see the remains of a burnt '55 or '56 Nomad.

None of it will be covered by home owners insurance. No one has full coverage auto insurance on projects in the yard. Really sad

  4. Carr fire was caused when a towed trailer had a flat & rim hit the asphalt - showering sparks.

    Hello,
All of this devastation is horrendous. But, we all have to live with what nature shoves our way. If they were not started by someone, then it just happens and they should pay the penalty. Locally, a big fire near Saddleback Mountain in Orange County started as a small fire in the morning. Within a few hours, it was 100 acres. By the afternoon news, it was 1200 acres and still burning up the tall slopes. Now, it is 4000 acres and still burning.

The location is near some beautiful, winding, hot rod cruising areas and it is a shame that it is on fire. Anyone that has lived in Orange County has at one time or another, gone up or has been near the burning area of Saddleback Mountain. Yes, from the ocean shores, the mountain view looks like a saddle...hence the name.

Santiago Peak can be seen by most of Orange County and parts of LA County. It sticks up after a low flat plain that runs all the way to the ocean in Orange County. So, it is disheartening that a fire is creeping up that favorite view site in this area. There have been homes destroyed and they are using big water tank planes to help out...but it is a fast moving fire.

I have a cousin in Redding, I check fb daily to keep up with her family. They are still at home but keeping a close eye on the fire. She mentioned many people she works with are not so lucky and have lost everything. Sad can't even begin to describe this terrible situation.

  10. Lots of fires up in OR and WA also. Kid of weird, the past 3-4 years the whole summer seems to be filled with the whole states on fire. I don't remember fires like this when I was younger

The prolonged drought conditions in the west have stressed the trees which then get infested by Bark Beetles. The result is millions of dead, standing trees. Lightning, or the slightest spark can result in a wildfire. The most recent event close to here was 50,000 acres caused by someone shooting Roman candles. There is no debate here whether it is hotter or there are dought conditions.

Many fires in SoCal and NorCal are caused by our friends at Edison. The winds blow, a hot line snaps, and 250 homes go up in smoke. Edison gets sued, their insurance pays the now homeless, and Edison raises their rates to compensate for their higher insurance policies.

Like the Godfather said in the movie, "it's just business"...

Just two weeks ago my wife, dog, and I suddenly evacuated our mountain home in idyllwild to flee the Cranston fire that erupted a few miles away after a screwball arsonist started several intense fires in the region by driving around throwing lit flares out his window. Fortunately some alert citizens up here reported his whereabouts and he was arrested in the act. Cal fire did an amazing job protecting our immediate neighborhood but a friend only a few blocks away lost her house and everything she owned. I'm giving generously to her gofundme account. She never had much, but I'm sure others in the community are going to help her get back on her feet. As for my '51 ford f1, I had to leave it behind that day we evacuated with only minutes of warning from the chp over his loudspeaker. But as I drove away, the cal fire assets were setting up a robust blockade along my street and I had the feeling we'd survive this inferno. Happy to report we did.

Not yet rated - Thanks for sharing - -- there are many sources for fires starting but, once they start it can be extremely difficult to contain and stop --- first responders, fire fighters, etc can never be Thanked enough for what they do for all of us --- helping those that lose their homes, etc need help too even if insured, never covers everything

Redding has for a very long time had a very active car culture. I lived there and owned property there for 10 years. For people that don't know that area, summers are damn hot in Redding. Temps in the hundreds last for a couple of months, add to that a very low humidity, like as low as 8% for extended periods and you are going to get fires. Redding sets between two mountain ranges and there are two old volcanoes within sight of most places in Redding. All around Redding and the surrounding areas are these pine trees. These trees are Digger Pines they are this twisted up weird looking pine tree. The live on the very little rain fall there, but once a fire and it doesn't have to be much of a fire either, they just explode sending sparks and burning crap everywhere. The country side around Redding is either almost straight up or straight down, I cannot imagine trying to fight a fire in that country.

The last I heard there had been seven folks lost to the fire, considering how big this fire was and still is to some extinct they may be lucky the number is that low. As to the cars lost, that is a sad thing no doubt about it, but in the big picture of tragic event like this they are some of the least important things lost. Cars can be rebuilt, folks not always.

  16. I don't know about over there, but here with the price of concrete and steel...a building like that would cost 10x's what a wooden frame building would. In my neck of the woods, Concrete is 120.00 per yard, PLUS delivery. The average car guy hobbyist just can't afford that.

My point is. Own less cars but protect those you own in concrete. Especially in fire zones.
