Car Fires Are Devistating

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by BADPANL, May 18, 2005.

  1. I had a run of bad luck this past 24 hrs... Last night i was cruising north on I-5, switched lanes, my lane stopped all of a sudden in the rain and i hit my brakes and e-brake, and hit him, about 40-50 mph. Air bag went off and all, my subaru is totalled, his truck is alright, everything is working out. Then, everyone including myself were like "at least i still have my panel". So this morning, i wake up to a phone call, from my dad "Brian, i have some bad news. Your panel burnt down in an inferno last night. All the tires popped, windshield melted, the panel itself melted, the metal, it was soo hot. Cops think it was an electrical fire." I did have dual batteries, only one in it though, the one in it was disconnected from the rest of the system, except when the key was on, and the key was off, and the battery to power to the key wasnt even in the car. I also had fuseable links, relas, and fuses on EVERYTHING, it was perfect. We think it was arson, as it had been sitting there for 2 months, then all of a sudden in the middle of the night, it burns?!? If the cops find nothing, i think i wanna hire a PI. I also did not have it insured as i wasnt driving it. It was just sitting there. There are a few people that dont like me and knew where it was, so yeah. Anyway, im sad, very very sad. If anyone knows of a 64-66 chevy panel near oregon somewhat, please let me know. Well, here are a few pics of what it used to look like, if you go to Http://www.streetsourcemag.com/Profile.aspx?profileid=31254 thanks for letting me vent.

    Holy CRAP!!!!!!!

That sucks. If it was arson I hope you catch the bastard(s) that did this. Fry their asses.

Doesn't sound like an electrical fire to me. I mean..2 months later? Right. maybe if it happened the night after being worked on or something like that.

As for the subaru...what was it? I am a subaru driver myself.

not to be a bastard...but ebrake....bad idea. Locks up the tires. Slide don't stop.
    Specially in the rain.

But damn dude. Talk about a run of bad shit happenin. Good luck finding out what happened to the panel.

Ah man, that sucks terribly. After we spend the effort and money to get these cars where we want them, we end up so attached to them. :( Sorry about your loss man.

You usually can't tell the cause of vehicle fires once the vehicle is burnt up. They probably said it was electrical because that was the only thing it could have been except arson. Everything in a vehicle melts when it burns, so you really can't tell. It could easily be arson. We've been to a bunch of brand-new vehicle fires. Interestingly they are usually about as far from a fire station as you can get. Most of our car fires, the cause is listed as "undetermined" because there isn't enough left to investigate.

    Sorry about your ride.

Damn man. Im sorry to hear about your bad luck. Having your new car wrecked sucks, but having you old car damaged when you have put so much work into it can be so much worse.
    Good luck with everything.

I feel for you bud. I also lost a hot rod to a fire. :(

For next time just remember fire and theft only insurance costs just pennies a day. If you go with a company like Grundy or Hagerty for speciality insurance you can get very reasonable premiums for year round full coverage.

damn that was a fine truck, thats gotta hurt. what ur gunna do with it?

  19. well, the body is toast, but i believe the step notched z-ed bagged frame with exhaust and engine to be good, so im gonna ditch that body, find another 64-66 panel, chop it 6" again, build the same truck. I set a goal when i started this to have it in a magazine by the time im 25, i turned 20 last weekend, and im still gonna hit the magazines with BADPANL, it will just be a little tougher.

  20. OH MAN! I saw you guys driving thru town last summer. I live Osoyoos.
Hadn't seen a chopped panel in LONG time. Was white or primer grey if I remeber right.
We have two panels, '62 and 65, in the yard here. Come and see me at Oliver Wrecking. I'll hook you up.

    that's so damn weak.

a good arson investigator can tell if an accelerant has been used.

Looks to me like it started on the inside of the car...that's crazy.

I mean...was nobody home? Cause that isht is toasty.

Sorry to see that. You can fix almost any other kind of damage but fire makes it really difficult to repair. But the good thing is that you can re-produce that truck easy now because you know where you made your mistakes on it and now you can make it even better than the first time around. Dont get discouraged!!!! Make it better and badder!! LONG LIVE BADPANL!!!!!!!!!!!!

Brian, what can I say? I know you poured your heart into your panel while you were here in Laramie and then had a ton more work in it after you left. I'm sure you're feeling like you lost a member of the family right about now. If there is anything I can do just let me know.

Hope to see you in Paso.

Man, sorry to hear about your loss. Thats really a tough deal. But being a cup's half full kind of guy that I am.........

Here's an idea......Cut the twisted roof, side panels and all the pillars off the truck, cap the tops of the doors and quarters, put in a new windshield frame, straighten out whats left of the lower quarters and build yourself one hell of a long ass Phaeton.

Nothing says cool cruiser like an 11 passenger rag top.

And Denise thought that BigOlds was a big rag top?

    Just a thought......

  27. Burnt the nose off my '34 panel once so I can really feel your pain. Had to bebuild everything from the firewall forward.

    Good luck with your rebuild.

Wow, I don't suppose my shitbox Suburban would be any kind of replacement for that. Talk to your dad about his homeowner's insurance, sometimes they'll cover items on the property. Might be worth a try. Read through the policy, don't call the agent, they'll always say no.
