    Hey gang,

My usually twisted mind thought of something as I was driving down East McDowell road in Phoenix today. I read Car Model Magazine in the early seventies as a kid back up in Minnesota before we moved here. Car Model magazine was published in Phoenix by Tonto publishing on McDowell road... Anybody have a copy handy that they could give me the adress for the publisher? Mine are packed so deep in the collection I haven't seen them in about 20 years. Just curious if the building still survives.

    Thanks, Chip

Thanks, but your kinda missing the point. I need the adress to the original magazine from the sixties and early seventies. I'm working on a Phoenix hot rod history project and want to see if the original building is still there.

Hhhhhmmmmnnnn, I know it was out of Phoenix by the early seventies and stopped printing in '73 or so. My subscription to it started a long line of magazines that I have killed just by subscribing! Probably would still be printing if I hadn't sent in my 3.50 or what ever it was all those years ago...There was also Model Car Science as well, but that was a different deal altogether.

The oldest copy I have is May 1965. Published by OLR Publishing co., Inc., Editorial and executive offices at 30 East 20th Street, NY, NY 10003. My model car (a VERY fugly custom vette) and a zit free mug shot are on page 31. Jeez... that was a long time ago.

Not to be confused with Car Model Science mag, which was published in LA. Gary

Perhaps they moved? Or it was printed / distributed in another location? Gary

I have a bunch of model car science also, but I don't have either of them past 1969.

The newest issue I have is July 1974. It says Tonto Publishing Co. Inc., 1309 E. McDowell Road, Phoenix, Arizona 85006.

If the building exists, I would like to see a photo of it-you got my curiosity up.

Also on the topic of your thread how about posting a pic of these mags for us YOUNG guys in our 40's that have never seen them? LOL! Sound like cool mags, I might want to try and find some of them! Jim

Thank you Sir!!! We have a winner! Unfortunately though, I'm willing to bet that the building is gone... parking lot for St. Luke's hospital these days. I'm going to drive over and check it out tomorrow though. Only about 9 blocks from my home/shop. Weird the stuff we think of when driving around town, right?
If you could post a picture of a Car Model Magazine for our younger friend here, it would be apreciated. As I said in the begining, my collection is packed away so deep I probably would have two days of unpacking to get to it.

Cool! Thank you so much for that link!

I remember my mom explaining to me that we were going to pick up roots and move to Phoenix, AZ in early '74 (She had missed our driveway and hit our neighbors car in the snow in St. Paul that day!). My thought was "Hey, that's where my magazine is from"! Too bad that when my change of adress caught up to us it was a notice that Car Model was to no longer be printed... Don't know it never dawned on me until today to look and see where it was.

Well, just got back from my running around for the morning, and sad to say that 1309 E. McDowell doesn't exist any more. There is a medical professional building at 1301 that takes up four spaces that would otherwise have been the old building. 1319 is an old store front that is now a kinda artists co-op/community, but used to house a cool semi- legal custom gun shop that made gatling guns... So the world turns.

Thanks to all that contribute to this thread!
