An old art school buddy of mine did some very preliminary conceptual artwork for the film adaptation of Stephen King's Buick 8. Apparently, it was supposed to be directed by either Tobe Hooper or Frank Derabont and released late last year or in the summer of 2011, but I heard it was plagued with script, casting and financial troubles. I guess it's on hold for now.

I'd like to see a Don Garlits movie along the same lines as World's Fastest Indian. Garlits is Drag Racing. Started with the Flathead, swapped to the HEMI and went from FEDs to rear engine. Real Pioneer.

My Father tells a story of illegal Drags that took place in the Bayous outside of New Orleans. There would be kids from all over that would show up with their Hot Rods and flashlights and race. Same story across the U.S. I'm sure. In his version though, a couple of brothers would haul their Front Engine Dragster out and do a run, parachute and all, then pack up and take off before the cops would show up. Every time he tells the story I think about the beginning to Two Lane Black Top but with the addition of a FED.

I think it would be a cool opening scene.

After watching that, if somebody ran with my original concept, the title would almost have to be "Big Daddy". I also think Woody Harrelson would be a great match for the old man. They even sound similar, No?

I think these ideas about the early days of the Ford Motor Company would make a great movie!

FoMoCo would be my choice, the rouge plant, organized labor, working out the challenges of mass production, Henry Ford and the T's the A's and the B's - make it somewhat like the genre of movies as "Chinatown" with J.Nicholson. Those were hard times in America and Henry Ford was a genius, yet he had his enemies.

  8. I totally agree. I saw that movie a couple of weeks ago. (It's on Netflix available online if anyone is interested). If you dig speed and have a bucket list you need to see it.

    Hey Travis...
It would be so neat, to see Ms. Granger come to the next 2011 KKOA Lead Sled Event in Salina next July with that beautiful '32 and her booth with the DVDs and all. It would be a real treat to meet her!...Wow!...duane

Hope to see her around El Mirage next spring..too!

How about a Stone Woods and Cooke movie. The story could write itself.

  12. A version of this was made probably 20-25 years ago.
I remember the scene with the Rouge plant riots.
I also remember a scene where Edsel goes down to tell the head of security how it is going to be. The head of security explains the virtue of wearing a bow tie to Edsel as he escorts him out by his neck tie.

  13. The story of William Crapo ( yes this is his real middle name) Durant would make one hell of a story. How he acquired company after company to assemble General Motors, was forced out, fought back and got control, then was forced out again and wound up broke managing a bowling alley. His arch enemy was Alfred Sloan who was the brains behind the modernizing of the corporate structure that most corporations now operate under.

What about a movie when soldiers were coming back from WWII and the hot rod scene was starting to get big?

Or something like two lane blacktop?

How about a car movie with someone smarter than a 4 year old overviewing the cars and script to make them believable??

A remake of "Cannonball Run" would be awesome. Lots of cameo's from big stars, Lots of cool rides new and vintage. All out cross country race ... And it would def have to have two top heavy girls in a Lambo! lol

LandSea&Air, there's a moment early in the film...and I'm trying to describe the capture, of what it means to know the artifact, the fabbed construct that a rod is. Gibson's Road Warrior opening was close, but it could be even more evocative, to say a rendering of great beauty. the film clip shows a rail powering out of the gate, taken w/a telephoto lens? depicting every twitch of the chassis, is something akin to watching the moon rise on a quiet night in the desert. Thanks for including that one. In teaching Design, that clip clarifies what the "rendering" (in this case a vehicle) is capable of.

  21. I LOVE good car movies, but the boneheads in Hollywood for the most part know NOTHING about our culture and to them a "good car movie" has lots of nice collector cars and trucks getting driven off of cliffs, rolled, burned, exploded, etc. (Dukes of Hazzard anyone???).

I for one am getting tired of seeing nice musclecars getting destroyed in a cheesy movie that has ZERO basis in reality. "Turn on the blower!!!" (with a PTO knob... really...???) That WAS an old movie, but...

The Walking Dead... zombie apocalypse in America... The cops are chasing a 72'ish GTO (or a nice clone). It blows a tire and rolls 25 times on a 2 lane blacktop... Another nice car or two in the scrap heap...

Car on fire in the background... the 2 lead characters look at each other with "ohmygod" expressions on their face and scream "NAAAAAWWWWSSS!!!" at each other as the car explodes.... (Really???) Ok, so they really weren't "nice" cars, but you get the point!!!

Nah... Hollywood (if you're listening) keep pumping money to Linday Lohan (she has needs!) or Charlie Sheen (he has needs too!!!). Stay away from our cool old cars & trucks and just keep making the same old movie over and over and charging us $10 - $15 to see blue avatars, sinking ships, end-of-the-world-because-of-global-warming, or boy-meets-girl movies. (If you could throw in some boobs every now & then, that'd be nice.) Thanks!

Here's a thought; Just watched On Any Sunday the other night on the tube. That and Endless Summer have no Greek or Hollywood angst or plot development, but are great to watch as art, due to the love of the subject matter.
Have a crew go around and document the car scene AT THIS TIME, stop at the current shows, a few shops, travel across the country with a rod (like Bass did) and document it all with a deep understanding of the subject and the movie will sell.

A bunch of good ideas on here, to be honest, I thought this thread would get more silly than it did. I don't know if my example of a successful film was a good one though. As far as I now know, The Worlds Fastest Indian Grossed $18,297,000 to date but cost $25,000,000 to make.

Apparently there are lots of ways to spend money on a film, especially if there are big names involved. Story rights, stars, directors, producers, music, etc. Maybe...maybe to be a success, at least on a moderate budget, some drama or social message, etc. would be necessary. I'm sure the early racing scene had plenty of that along with the wholesome feel good moments as well. Perhaps a car guy "feature film" could be done on an indie budget? Or have investors willing to roll the dice and/or be patient about seeing some chance of a return or profit.

Also, If it was a racing/hot rod type movie, it may have to cover a broad time period and include many characters to gain interest. Most likely won't have legs for a sequel and needs to go big first time out with mucho attention to detail (car guys can be very critical):D

    My favorites so far are:

    Garlits (obviously)
Steve McQueen (guaranteed hit if you ask me, don't forget the toys)
    Jungle Jim (showmans showman)
    Mickey Thompson (did it all)
Stone Woods Cook (maybe a bit too soon because of recent events):(

I have much respect for Ford but I think a lot of us don't wan't to see all his skeletons on the big screen.

RodStRace has a good idea too, My ideas are more about a "as it was, look back in time" type thing, minus the cheese. With all the advances and troubles we have in the modern world, I think most of the public are more than primed for a bit of simple nostalgia.

One more thing somewhat related, Is this where the term Cannonball Run came from? http://history.gmheritagecenter.com...Baker’s_1927_Record_Setting_Cross_Country_Run
