Hey guys... heres my dilemma. Im purchasing this home that has a detached garage in the back yard. Its only 15' deep and my car is at least 17'. That being said I was looking into my options of what to do for my car. The best thing and cheapest thing I came up with was the metal car ports. I was going to put one right in front of the garage you see in the pics below. Im in the military so I will have to re sale this house at some point so I would want to do something that would not deter from the resale but also not be really expensive being I wont be in the house forever due to military moving me.

I had an estimate done for extending a car port built off the garage with no sides just a roof and lights and what not and that would be $3500... little high for me. I can get the metal type car port actually installed for under $1000 with no sides, and a black roof to match the shingles. This would probably be put right up on the garage covering my car as you see it pictured below. I could get the sides enclosed for under $2K but I may wanna wash the car and what not under it so I thought sides may be an over kill.

Just seeing what yalls input would be or if yall have any pics of your own carports in front of a garage and how it looks. Hope this is a HAMB friendly post, I searched garages and car ports on here and didnt find anything. Thanks.

I'd ad a couple feet to the backside of the garage.

That would be an idea but wouldnt work due to that not being on my land. Also would be a bit expensive and Im going for the cheapest but most useful and easy on the eyes for resale. Thanks though... Hope some of yall have some pics of what you've used at your house.

Shorten your wheel base by 6" :D Just kidding I would have to gouge my eyes out if you ever touched that car!!! Love that damn thing.

Actually PM Bloodyknuckles and see what he says. He might be able to help you out since he's a talented craftsman when it comes to home building and such. He might have a trick or could possibly be contracted to do the work for you.

Also check garagejournal.com which is a sister site of the HAMB for more ideas. Run the idea by them and see what they say. There are a lot of talented dudes there.

And being the garage or "garden shed" (which is what it should be called) is pretty small, I figured some type of carport in front of it would make most sense. Then I could store tools/parts/yard stuff in the "garage" haha.

You could just about build a shed roof yourself attached to the front for what a metal carport would cost. It might not add to the re-sale price but it might help attract another buyer.

    Nice Olds!

Don't do it man. I made that mistake. Same thing, loved the house, hated the garage-it was the same size as yours. At the time I had a really nice 54 chev that wouldn't fit. I knocked down the back side and extended it enough to fit. The only problem? it was still so narrow that you could barely get out of the car once inside, and there was no way to work on it in there. Not worth the hassle unless you plan to knock it down and build a proper garage.

Second of all: Killer Olds you got there. It deserves a respectable garage.

Move the furniture in the garage and put a 9' wide door on the house. Bam problem solved!

I'd ad a couple feet to the front side of the garage. $1000.00 will buy a lot of lumber.

    SIMPLE !!
Just buy yourself a cheap enclosed trailer !!
    :)

When you sell the house, either sell the trailer or take it with you.
They make a excellent place to store your ride.

See them on Craigslist for less than the prices for fixing the gargage

Thanks for the compliments on my Olds guys...

Im not that worried that the garage isnt perfect being that I wont be at this house anymore than 4 years due to being in the Air Force. Ive found companies that do great metal car ports for under $1K installed. Im really just looking for some possible pictures of what others have that may be similar. Just dont want to make an eye sore that ruins my resale. I would completely re build the garage if it was going to be my permanent residence for more than 10 years, but that not being the case I'd just like to do something practical but still serves a good purpose.

Glad yall dig our pool haha :D

A lean-to to the left of the garage would be ideal. For working on the ride or storing the contents of what is in the building already. Being you are in a humid and hot season, picking the right time of day to work on your ride is key. More shade if the sunlight wears you down, then a port or two (!$!) will be in order. Keep your eyes on local ads. There may be a good used port on hand. Double down on on the GarageJournal for ideas for this application.

Ok - this isn't cool, but... I'm a renter and for three years I rented an apartment with a nice big driveway but no garage. I went to Tractor Supply and bought what was literally called a " Garage in a Box ". It was 12' x 20' Nd under $500. It was made of a tarp- like material over N aluminum rib structure. I ran a decent extension cord out to it with a good power strip inside. I had florescent lights hanging inside, a workbench, and a shelf. The power strip was screwed to the bench so I could use two or three outlets. It lasted three upstate New York winters and was fine when I sold it when I moved. It worked.

    Buy a Rambler?

I'm in the same boat you are. My garage was built during the Model A era, so my 55 Packard would not fit inside until I took the front clip off. Now the garage door will shut.

I am building a carport off the side in the future. Maybe enclose it later.

Yea, the car ports a company sells here in town, you can get an all metal just plain jane car port for $595 installed. No sides or anything on it, just metal roof, and if buyers didnt like it when I went to sell the house they could just take it down, this is probably what im leaning towards doing. Thanks for the input man!

You solved your own problem. On the $595 carports installed it doesn"t cost that much more for sides either. Don"t fall for one of those cheap tarp carports from Tractor Supply. They might work in the north but the southern sun and heat eats them alive.Waste of money.Want proof got pics.

I second this, then when you move you can do a PPM (DITY move) and probably make enough to pay for the trailer.

Yea, this house was built in 1957 but recently renovated and looks great, especially on the inside! I was just wanting to put the car port in front of the garage due to it being easily accessible when doing maintenance on the car. Also it would still be on the level cement driveway. Just dont want to put a lot of money in this project due to I probably wont get it back since Im not going to be in this house for a really long time because of military.

i agree with colville about them portable storage garages, there made of heavy material and have a tubular frame, your car is fully enclosed and out of the weather, rain, snow no problem, the front has a zipper door, only takes a few hours to put up, and when you move you can sell it on craigs list, love them olds i had a 1950 club coupe in 1960, thank you for your service to our country..
