So I have gotten myself in an area that I know nothing about. I have been invited ( invitational only ) to take part in a new style car show and I have no idea as to how to display my car in it's best fashion. I have spent several hours going back through my old mags trying to see how the old displays were done. Does anyone have any suggestions as to the display? At this point, I am wide open.

As to the show itself ( www.carbuilderbattle.com), it might just be fun. There are a total of 40 cars in the show. 20 will be hot rods and 20 will be tuner cars. They have a little more than 10 judges including the editor of Hot Rod magazine. The judges will pick out their top 5 in each of the 2 catagories. On Sunday, the 20 hot rod guys will vote for the best tuner of the 5 the judges picked and the 20 tuner owners will vote for their favorite hot rod of the 5 the judges picked . You end up with a 1 in 4 chance of getting into the top 5 so it might be fun. You end up with a winner in each class and I think there is some money and prizes. The class winner with the most single votes ( 20 votes available for each catagory) wins best of show and $5,000.00. This could be a fun time.

With all this in mind, how about some suggestions to help me show my car in the best possible light. I would love to borrow some kind of HAMB sign or banner for the event.

And to set straight any questions, I have asked Clark to be at the show as he is the builer, not me. I know how that "built thing goes down fast ". And thanks to Seth ( treatemrough) for hooking me up with this.

Angel hair......Lots of Angel Hair. Seriously, I always felt like anything too elaborate display-wise detracted from the car itself. It's a neat car. Whatever you do, let the car speak for itself. Good luck.Sounds like a fun time. Interesting concept bringing the two genres together and letting them vote on each others efforts.....Don.

    Angel hair is always good.

Maybe a placard with info about the car as well (have a pinstriper make one up if you don't have one)

Here's an example that was on the HAMB:

This is the full post if you need it:

Congratulations and good luck in the competition.

Dont get me wrong but this show is billed as a showdown between tuner and hot rod then you say its invitation only dont get me wrong I dont have anything that I could compete with but if they already picked out the cars for the show would it not make sense that they had already picked out a winner :confused:

  5. Sounds like an interesting idea. getting the tuners to look at and talk to hotrodders CAN'T hurt!

at first it seemed a little strange to me. The judges only pick the top 5 in each catagory. the 20 participant hot rod entries doing the voting for one of the top tuners and vice versa... ....they may have

Thanks Joe...gonna see if I can get one done !

  7. I think you stand a pretty good chance! I also vote for Angel hair.

thanks , that was my next question

  12. depends on the car and the way its judged....will they give you a judges sheet ahead of time so you know how points are being broke down? what about power for lights? do you do your own ropes and stantion or are they doing it? is there extra points for doing a display? if not.worry about the details in and around the car.I always sugest a DETAILED judges informatin note book with photos if you get the judges sheet put it in order of the sheet.....MOST shows you get points for underhood, trunk, inside, underside so worry about thatand damn sure do a KOOL signas everybody gets the details on your car there (besides its kool on the shop wall after)so if its ALL being judged OPEN it up some so judges can see it all door about 1/3 open on one side only........hope this helps getting you in the right direction........here's one of my old set-ups

I like to see a car sitting on a carpet, or astro turf, or anything rather than just sitting on a concrete floor......I also like it when the car's not jacked up in any way, I like to see the actual stance.....some guys leave the doors and hood and trunk open, and take a wheel off so you can look at chrome brakes or whatever, but when they do that, you can't really see what the car looks like......Maybe if you have a shiny quick change, or lots of chrome under the car, you could put a mirror on the floor so people don't have to crawl around to look...............

I know a lot of guys are down on puting their cars in indoor car shows for trophys etc.....but I've done it, and had a blast with all the people.....There's always the odd weird whispering guy who's pissed off because he didn't win the big trophy so he's bad mouthing everybody......just make sure that guy isn't you, and you'll have a good time........

And, oh ya, put lots and lots of dolls and stuffed toys everywhere !:D

i dont think anybody on here is above winnin 5 grand!!! plus with a car that cool, i say the odds are in his favor!!!

  15. IF THEY CANT SEE IT THEY WILL NOT JUDGE IT! so open the 1 door (side away from crowd) and trunk a little and make sure they can see under the car tilt it on one side, ITs a damn show not a cruise in........clean and simple make the car the focus

If you do a placard, keep it clean and simple. Don't do any of that "special thanks to jimbob's painting". You're the one that paid him, he should be thanking you! The car is the focal point, not the damn sign.

Make sure you've taken care of the little details like orienting the hubcaps so they're all level and the same direction.

I've been wanting to paste pictures of my car in random magazines like Math Stweart Living or Model Trains Mag or something off the wall and then display them as if my car was featured in them. Then I want to (already started) drive around to thrift stores and buy up a bunch of old bolwing trophies and little trophies and display them around my car as awards.

You can borrow this idea if you want.

Go find some of those old spot lights that have the colored wheel that spins in front of it. You don't see it done any more but it was the standard back in the day. Plus a spot shining in on the interior and yes angel hair. A nice velvet rope with chrome standards would look nice also. Of course you need the fancy painted tool box with chrome wrenches laid out with it. That was quite common in the day. Search old photos of the GNRS and the World of Wheels in DC. Im going to look up this show. If its close I gotta go.

I just finalized my showcard. The guy who striped my T is going to a chopped 32 ( fiberglass )grill shell with a solid insert with the information on the insert.

One thing down, 150 things to go....wash the car ...151 things to go

Rock Salt. and lots of it. maybe blue and white, i dont know if or where you can do that but it would be cool.

  23. Something light colored under the car like angel hair will set off that blue paint. I like the rock salt idea, or sand, or a bear skin rug, pin up optional. I saw you let a child sit in your car at Timonium a few years ago so maybe if you keep it simple and let the people look and touch, you may just be the winner. Will certainly stand out if the others are behind some kind of barrier to keep the public away. Good luck.

  26. not pissed at all,but its just like racing why do it if you dont want to win?? I was damn good at it and know what it takes to win, even a nice car can do very well if shown properly, and I like the traditional way of using tool box, gas/oil/water cans etc

  27. heres some ideas some are kinda extreme but look for small ideas in them
