Hi, We are looking for 2 QUALIFIED Judges for our September 7 Car and Motorcycle Show, held in Saddle Brook,NJ This is a well established show with a average of 150-160 cars in attendance every year. Our last 2 Judges moved out of state and we are now 2 Judges down. Please NO WANNA BE'S , you MUST be a well rounded person, with knowledge of Street Rods, Muscle Cars, Classics,Pro-Touring, Antiques and every other kind of car that shows up. And be able to judge fairly all the cars. You MUST be able to work with the other Judges. Since this is a charity event where ALL the profits go to charity,we cannot pay you, but you will get a Judges T-Shirt and the satisfaction of knowing that your work will benefit, the Saddle Brook Girl Scouts, Saddle Brook Boys Scouts and Our Lady of Mount Virgin Church. If you feel your the person to help us out, e-mail me and we'll talk
At our car show, (350-400 cars) we solved the judges problem years ago by having participants do the judging. Each entrant gets a voting ballot at registration and chooses their favorite car (by car number) in 3 different classes (ballots are alternately handed out as class 1-2-3, class 4-5-6, class 7-8-9 etc)....and then they get their dash plaque when they turn their ballot in. The car number that gets the most votes in their class get the 1st place, second most votes gets 2nd place etc.
One of the problems we have, believe it or not, is there are only 8 people on our show car committee!! We are stretched very thin during the show, and another thing we usually have close to 50 trophies to give out. That's how we make a big portion of our profits. Last year went very smooth with 3 Judges.
Yeah, but that means that the participants will only get mad at each other instead of club members/judges....we are off the hook...cuz there is ALWAYS somebody who is mad about not winning a trophy.
Sounds like there needs to be some scaling back, 50 trophies!!! I've never really understood the whole trophy chasing mentality, Shows should be about getting out with fellow minded folk to enjoy our rides and show the public what is still out there. I kinda agree with the 'Peoples Choice' approach for at least one award it gets attendees involved and making the most of the whole show. At my club's show we only give out three awards, Peoples Choice, Best American and Best of the Rest, as its in conjunction with an all day music event we normally get one of the staff from that to pick the winners. If we have a club member over from an international chapter then we get them to pick. So far we have been lucky and all the winners have been genuinely shocked and nice folks to boot.
150 cars and 50 trophies. Just pick every third car. Peoples choice piss most people off around here. Can't please everyone. Trophies hunter are the worst.
Why not eliminate judging and just give every entrant a dash plaque at registration table? That way nobody gets upset. Everyone wins. Trophies are just dust collectors.
My "favorite" is the best engine award. Typically goes to the SBC with the most billet, chosen by someone's niece.
A simpler version. 2 of the members of our club run smaller shows (100-200 cars) for their local fire depts. They use the same "3 class ballot" as mentioned above, except it's just a "3 car ballot" and they give out "top 25" trophies for the top 25 vote getters....no classes...much simpler
"Au contraire"! During the 1980's our club (Classic Cruisers) hosted many big car shows with over 150 cars in South Florida. Folks didn't mind getting dash plaques as we gradually phased out trophies and judges. The only people who complained were the Corvette owners -many of whom are trophy hounds.
I 'm one of those people who think that trophies are basically useless although I can see having a special trophy at major large events where pros can compete. I think the simple way would be to give out maybe 10 trophies based on the number of votes cars get from the people attending. Each Trophy would simply state "One of the Top 10 Peoples choice" or "One of the 10 best liked cars " at Whatever the event is. There would be no number one and no number ten, just 10 Awards saying that people at the show voted it was one of the 10 most liked vehicles. None of the subjective judging that inherently has bias even if a judge tries to be honest and fair. After all, isn't the whole show about attracting people to the hobby and getting them involved? I also think that giving out too many trophies is akin to not keeping score in little league games and giving all the kids a "I participated" plaque. Not trying to be a "smarta**" here @sweetdick2 but honestly I have always felt there is no way to truly decide that one vehicle is a better build than all the others except for its basic overall eye appeal. What do the masses think they liked the best ? A guy I met/know slightly at the SRN in Louisville entered a car in the pro display inside the building. It was absolutely flawless, shiny, gleaming. No way there was any better built car in that small select group of builders. But, it was a T Bucket which is usually not currently as popular as they once were. On the other hand, there were a lot more popular car builds..........AND they were equally as well done. There wasn't one car in there that wasn't perfect. They were all freakin PERFECT............. So let the people be the judges instead of having judges pick flysh*t out of pepper and let the pros compete for the "Best of Show" trophy. Anyway, thats my opinion and I hope it didn't offend you. Like I said, it's perfect............and so are the other competitors. How can someone make an honest choice? I couldn't. But I will say that even though he's a nice guy and I know him, I liked other cars better because this type of build is not my cup of "T". I simply liked some other cars better because of my preferences.......not because the workmanship or detail was superior to this one. I'd rather have this......... or this............ Or even this....... AND IF ......I had to pick one of the 3 above as my favorite it would be : The truck.........it just looks exactly like I think a hot rod truck should look. Its not "overdone", not over shiny, not over chromey, and looks like it would be a great driver. I'd give it a 10 Best ............
What's your judging criteria? Are you going off ISCA type sheets? Or just whatever floats the judge's boat? I'm involved in a couple of clubs that hold shows every year (30+ years for each) and one thing we've learned is avoid awarding 'Best' trophies as that's the can with the most worms. Instead, we hand out 'favorite' awards in the various categories, reserving 'Best' for original/restored stockers and modified cars, one each. And nobody gets more than one trophy... We also try very hard not to have repeat winners in a given category in consecutive years. Peoples/Participants choice trophies are another can of worms as ballot box stuffing can be a real issue. Long distance is another one. We had a guy who bought a local car online, then flew in from back east and tried to claim that. No matter what you do, some trophy whore will almost always end up pissed off.
we try and sell as many trophy's as we can, THAT'S where we make most of our money. There is NO corporate sponsors. We've been shifting from traditional trophy's to 8 x 10 plaques which people seem to like better, you can hang them up. Thank's for the input guys. we've just acquired another judge, so one more to go..
When Hellbent-Hoods had the 30 Birthday show this April. We did Best Hot Rod, Best Kustom, Best Bike, and then there was 2 local clubs that presented awards, and 1 builder award from a local shop. It seem to go well, when it was over the over arching theme was home built drivers.
