Hey Guys, I am buying a 49 Merc from a guy in Texas and he doesn't have the title anymore as the car was given in a trade and hasn't been driven for ever. So question is how do you get a title for a car that doesn't have one??

If you haven't already bought the car, it's easy. Have the current (legal) owner get a title in his name and transfer it to you. If he owns the car, is a Texas resident with ownership privileges, he should be able to get a title. If he can't get a title for himself, I'd stay away from that deal. In Texas, the DMV has all (legal) bases, all (legal) situations for any given circumstance covered.

Easy! You search the forum for 'title' or thereabouts, and read the previous 12 quagillion threads about them. *then* if you can't find an answer to your question, you post a new thread saying "I searched before posting this but didn't have any luck...."

That said, I'd try international title service. Odds are it won't be difficult and will cost about $150.

some states will not accecpt titles from title service companies. as said before you should have the seller do the leg work and have a title before you part with your cash. If you are taking to to canada check what is required to get it across the border. I just bought a 46 chevy truck . the procedure was bill of sale. inspection for vin. statement why no title was availabe. search of dmv records then a title was issued to me.. it was easy since the dmv clerk knew the widow of the former owner and her son who was cleaning out the farm. my cost was $12.

  5. It's not too hard to due the bonded title process in Texas. There are places like Lawrence Title that can make it easier. I have no idea what it would be like to try it in Canada...

I'm not sure what this means. Did he have the title at one point? Or he never got a title in the trade?

  7. Unless it's in pieces, better get one BEFORE you hit the border. It's a pain in the ass to get it across without one. Assuming your Montreal is the big one in Canada, of course.

Well I'll give the FNG credit - he's asking before buying the car, instead of after buying it & dumping 30k in it & then asking about a title.

It should be fairly simple for the owner in TX to get a title for it. You have to have all the paperwork at the US side of the border 72 hrs BEFORE you take the car across to Canada. I 'think' you need both the title and Bill of Sale to move it over the border. You should be able to check locally there to get the procedure.

  10. if their is no title and to get it into canada you will need to contact a broker for the proper paperwork and they charge $$$$ so i would get the vin # and contact texas dmv for proper paperwork. dbradley is correct you will need to fax copy of paperwork ahead to the border and that will allow you to bring it into canada.

I'd think that if he has had the vehicle in his possession for a length of time he should be able to go to the Texas DMV and get the bonded title. There are some stipulations with those but the car would be legal and you wouldn't run into hassles down the line for having a phony title.

Here is the Texas dmv link for bonded titles http://www.txdot.gov/search/default.htm

Woops, when that comes up, put Bonded title in the search.

This day in age if he won't jump through a few hoops to get the paperwork done for what the selling price of the car probably is I'd pass and look for another one with a clear title.

As the guys said, going across the border with the car without documentation from the State of Texas that you actually own the car and it is a legal (title wise) car is going to be the pits.
