Car vs truck 235

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Classic Iron, Feb 8, 2010.

  1. I've looked at four (1954 and newer) 235's for my 51 Styleline Deluxe reformation. Seems there are way more truck versions available than car. Any issues with a truck engine? Fit, adapability? I read some where that the truck engine had solid lifters and the cars had hydraulic. Any bad experience's with solids? Also, what would you expect to pay for a good running engine? I looked at 2 good runners tonight both installed in 57 chevy pickups. One of the runners didn't have an oil filter strapped to the intake, the guy told me that was an option, is that true?

    Any help would be appreciated.

  2. Yes, the oil filter was an add-on or dealer option, I believe. The truck motor had solid lifters. I've never had a problem with them. They seem pretty bullet proof. I have one in my other '58 that has almost 115k on it and has never had the head off.

They make a little more noise than the car motors (because of the solids) and of course you better get used to adjusting valves.

As far as fit and adaptability they are the same as the car motors. Same block, Same mounts etc.

as far as i know the 235 should be the same in both the car and the truck. the solid lifters were in the manual trans cars & trucks and the hydraulic were in the powerglide cars. the patricks catalog says they know of no satisfactory hydraulic lifters so i reckon solids are the way to go. and yep the oil filter was an option. i would recomend gettin the patricks catalog here is their number (520) 836 1117 lots of good stuff in there

the owner is correct on the oil canister, it was an add on option. it should be to big of a deal to bolt in, if i remember your 51 should have the front engine mount. not possitive but i recall the cars with automatics had hydraulic lifters. off hand prices of these engines are anywhere from $150-400 depending on how bad you really need it. hope this helps ya abit
