Car-wise, what did you hate about the 70's?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Groucho, Sep 25, 2006.

  1. I'll start with those stupid Sheepskin seat covers, and Cocoa Mats

  2. Smog motors, but at least everything was rear wheel drive!

  3. 5 mph bumpers that looked like giant inbred hillbilly underbites
    Square headlights
    Vinyl landau roofs
    Mustang IIs
    Ridiculous gigantic decals
Shag carpet airbrushed boogie vans with plexiglas crescent moon outhouse windows
    Spring shackles extenders
    Reflecto tape stick-on lettering
    8 track stereos
    fat 60 series front tires

Everything..... watered down "muscle" cars, Pintos, Chevettes, most any "economy' car, (Gremlims were O.K.) High gas prices, four cylinder "hot rods", all the new cars rusted out in a year...man, the seventies sucked for cars....

Jacked up ass-ends on musclecars, with Cragars and raised white letter tires.

The way that the clean lines of the '60s/very early '70s U.S. cars gave way to the bulbous and cartoon-like styling of '74-up cars.

Emissions systems like Chrysler's Lean Burn, which caused horrendous driveability problems.

The advent of the disposable car.

gas making the jump from .20/gal early 70s to .65/gal by the end of the decade...
and if that wasn't bad enough then we had to wait in line to get the stuff...

    I don't remember much of the 70's.
    That was during "The Fog".

    But here goes...

'76-'77 Cutlass Supreme "Bro'Ham" was the only half way decent looking American car in the "cow catcher bumper" era.

Porsche is the only car that actually looked better with te impact bumpers.

I don't mind square headlights because they were a stepping stone for betting rid of the stupid "Sealed Beam" DOT law.

Shag carpets were a bummer if you dropped a lit roach...

I pitty anyone with a "T-Top" that leaks.
You couldn't get rubber replacements when they were near new because you didn't know which after market top you was dealing with.

The worst part is this damn State still makes consumers keep all that hardly worked in the first place smog crap on the ones that still run.

  16. Yeah, but we were putting that gas in great affordable 50's-60's affordable daily drivers.

Agree with the first few Mike mentioned but the 70's did have a few good things, vans ruled, mini trucks got started and AG was filmed..

but some great styled cars also

    71-73 vega's , 70-72 camaro's (what about the Motion versions),
78-79 monte carlos and 2 dr caprices, malibu's and El camino's

How about those jacked up street freaks

Here's a couple of reasons to hate the '70s. There was an AMC dealer in my town and these things were everywhere. I still have nightmares..

Smog corvettes, and the way they styled the cars.

I think those vans are funny, I would drive one of those no problem (maybe without the airbrushing). On the other hand the early 70's gave us way cool boat tail rivieras. Last corvette body style with nice lines made for a LONG time.

    110hp 350's.

    Crushed velour seats.

Earl Scheib-quality paint from the factory.

Fords that shifted from park to reverse by themselves.

    The Pinto.

    The Mustang II.

    The Trans Am.

HUGE Stickers and tape stripes on everything (see above).

Cars that were decorated instead of styled.

    The Cadillac V8-6-4.

The fact that Detroit built this shit through the '80s, and GM up to the early '90s.

How many of you that hate the '70's, lived through the '70's? I did, and I remember some pretty good times. It was the Southern Rock era, not the Disco era.

  30. You left out that other AMC hemmoroid i think it was the Pacer? Looked like a fishbowl, and the door panels stuck a half a foot higher than the door itself. But, it looked OK with the Levi interior.....KIDDING!
