Hey guys got a ‘60 impala with a stock 283 and a 5yr old Edelbrock carb. Prior to being garaged 5 years ago it ran great. I’ve been doing a slow restoration hence why it’s been 5 years since it was driven daily. I would start it up every couple of months just to move the oil around and keep the carb from gumming up. Prior to today it was started and ran fine 5 months ago. I stared it up this morning and it was idling at 1000rpm and it wouldnt initially bog out every time I have it has. So should I spray some carb cleaner and drive her on the street in hopes of burning off the gummy carb or should it be rebuilt? It’s only a 5yr old carb with maybe 300 miles on it. Thanks
I think you need a better explanation of the problem you are experiencing. 1000 rpm idle could be normal on start up if the choke is working properly.
I recently purchased a nice little machine that is a cream puff . Less than 25,000 miles and it runs like a dream . Anyway,,,,,,it has been sitting about 6-7 weeks because getting a few things fixed and doing the license and insurance . I decided to get her out last Saturday and it was not acting exactly right . Had been starting funny and was not what I remembered when I got it . I was down to a quarter tank and it dawned on me,,,(I had put some low grade stuff in to drive it home ),,that cheap gas I had put in it was getting stale ? I stopped at our local place that sells Premium 93 100% gas,,,,no ethanol ! After about 10 minutes ,,,,,,my new baby was just like I remembered . I can stop and shut it down and a few minutes later,,,cranks like a new one again ! Cheap ethanol gas with a little age on it can make a difference in idle quality and running,,,,,you might examine that possibility ? Tommy
Yeah I’m in San Diego and it’s currently 80+ degrees. The gas we get here is all that environmentally friendly bull***** stuff. It’s not like back in the day when there was leaded. I’ve never messed with the settings on this Edelbrock 8867 carb. It was installed new at a shop 5 years ago and ran great and idled at 500rpm. The choke heat risers have been removed. So I just sprayed carb cleaner inside it and it doesn’t stumble and idle went down to 9-800. I’d like it to be around 500rpm.
I agree with jaracer, it sounds like the highspeed idle linkage is still connected, its that arm & linkage on the drivers' side. With the engine shut off you can open the throttle fully and there is a high speed idle adjusting screw, you can back it out to defeat its purpose since you disabled the choke (if I read that correct).
