Technical carb cleaner

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by John Buchanan, Nov 25, 2013.

  1. Does anyone know what was in the old time carb cleaner? The new stuff doesn't work very good. I think the old stuff had methylene chloride in it. I think that's still available at the hardware store. We used it for gluing Plexiglas together . The last batch of the good stuff had water on top of it in the can. The can rusted out so I had to get rid of it. Something I regret now,. JB

Not sure about the ingredients but, equal parts vinegar and water in a pot, works pretty good. I put the pot on an old Coleman stove and get it almost boiling.

Are wanting the old stuff to glue plexi together again, or to clean carbs better?

I think the only thing that is the same between the old Berryman's Chem Dip and the new is the smell.

Way back then we used Trichlorethlene and Carbon Tetrachloride for a lot of greasy cleanup..

Dangerous and lethal on parts you would weld..
    Phosgene gas..

  8. I don't want to glue Plexiglas. I want to clean the carburetor. The new stuff is like diesel fuel or similar and doesn't remove all the sludge. I contacted Gunk and they won't tell the formula for the old stuff. Product liability. worked at a place that used 111 trichlor. Freon and several other bad things to clean glue off airplane antennae. The stuff really worked. I don't want to make the stuff and sell it . I just need to clean the carbs on old cars. JB

Try NAPA 2+2 gumcutter. Also works as a starter fluid.

  10. I think that's what I use to build plastic models (I got from plexi store). It does not glue anything. It's "hot" enough to melt the two pieces of plastic together as it evaporates. More like welding plastic rather than an adhesive. So that's probly not an ingrediant

We got some Berryman chem-dip professional and it works real well.
And we have used Master carb and parts cleaner that has worked the best.
