Getting frustrated and need some outside thoughts to guide me... Current issue: Engine revs up ok but then misses and bogs at the higher rpm 2700+ Motor: Gm performance base 350 w/ tci 350 trans. Edelbrock carb and manifol Previous changes and story to current issue..: Was getting warm and causing vapor lock like issues, boiling in fuel filter. But would rev up and drive at higher rpm fine. So swapped out mechanical fuel pump for an electric which is by the tank. And added a manual fan in addition to the existing pusher electric. Got it to idle well and engine bay temps are way better, also no bubbling visible in the fuel filter. Drove it at this point and noticed high end issues.. it seamed to do it more when it sat running to get it warm. So I added a phenolic spacer to the carb since it was very hot to the touch. This didn't change the way it drove. Still had issue. Thought that maybe fuel pump wasn't keeping up but put a gauge on it and it seams to be holding at 6psi. Now here is the other issue. And my friend has the same exact setup and we both have to give it excessive timing to idle and run right. And when it was accelerating well the timing was still high. I tried to turn it down to just idle well enough thinking total advance was to much... and no better. I dont think its the accelerator pump because it revs up good but just doesnt hold rpm without skipping Sorry for the long drawn out story, just wanted to get the details out and hopefully get a solution.
standard distributor, accel I think, Not an HEI I have pushed on the plug wires, and they are loomed nicely.. everything is new, and the car only has 40 miles of test and tune on it so far. have not check plugs yet maybe the prior issue fouled the plugs some how?
Yup, ignition. Sounds retarded, something amiss. Thats not to say the carb has problems too, think of them as seperate gears in a machine and you have to get them working together. Like 'speedfreak' the ignition needs attention.
Will check ignition tomorrow step by step and maybe try another distributor I have laying around. Why would both of these motors like the timing to be set in the upper 20's to 30's to run correctly.. is there a chance it came with the wrong timing mark from the factory?
New doesn't necessarily mean good, it never did but that holds true now more than ever with the cheesy parts coming from the cheapest bidder providing child labor.
I run the same motor/tranny combo as you on my Willys. My Edelbrock is a 600 cfm. I run a gap intake manifold which helps with the heat issues. I also have a fuel cooler after the mallory electric fuel pump. Fuel pressure gauge on regulator is at 5psi. My timing is at 9 degrees BTDC. As a side note,to combat heat, I am also running a 7 quart oil pan, external 2 qt. oil filter and oil cooler...
