I came across an 1956 F-700 chassis with a 272 Y-Block. I'm looking to get it running, then determine what to do with it. It is missing the carburetor and the 2-bbl intake has four studs spaced in a rectangular pattern of 1-7/8" by 3-1/4 ". I don't have any carburetors laying around with that pattern. So I am considering buying something from the local parts store. What carburetors had that bolt pattern and what vehicles would they have originally come on? I understand some of the Rochester 2Gs and some Carters had that same pattern. If so, what did they come on? So far my search for the '56 Ford truck shows carburetors with the 3-bolt pattern like the Stromberg and Ford 94. Again, mine has the 4-bolt pattern. Suggestions???
I haven't done any measuring, but the Ford two barrel up to around 84 should work. It's a very good carb and easy to work on, there should be 1000s around. My 64 F100 292 has one one it.
Or you could probably make an adapter plate for the carb 302aod suggested or modify one to work real easy. Those Ford 2 barrels were on the majority of their V8's from the late 60's up through the 70's and are simple as hell and easy to work on. And they take a standard four barrel air cleaner.
THANKS for the responses. You guys are right about that Ford 2-bble carb. I think that is the 2100 model. I have rebuilt a few and Yes; they are simple and work fine. They do have a bigger bolt pattern so some adapting would need to be done. I may go that route.
I have a 2BBL carb on my 57 Ford F-100 with 272. I have no idea what carb it is, but it is weird, with the throttle linkage on the passenger side. I would look at a 2GC and see if it will fit. When measuring, check the bore diameters of the manifold, then the actual butterflies.
I have a Holly 500 cfm 2v on my 272, fit like a glove and runs great. I can get the number of it later if need be.
I came across the guy I bought the truck from. He still had (and gave me) the Carter BBD carburetor that was on the truck when he had it. I know that's not what the truck was equipped with originally, but it had been on the truck for a while and was running good (as reported to me). I got a rebuild kit, will do the rebuild and get it on the truck when I get some time. The rebuild kit shows the carb was original equipment on '74 through '84 Dodge vehicles with a 318 V8. We'll see how it does.
JFYI, If the 272 is a '56, it will have a vacuum-only loadomatic distributor, that only works correctly with a carb designed for loadomatic distributors.
V8 Bob - How will I recognize the loadomatic distributor? Was the loadomatic distributor a means of an engine governor? Thanks for the "heads-up"!
Ford used loadomatic distributors from '48 truck/'49 car V8s up till '56, and 6s for many years later. Loadomatics have no mechanical advance, so there won't be any fly weights. The vacuum diaphragm directly controls the advance plate. The vacuum source from the carb is a mixture of vacuum signals depending on rpm and load that max out around 6" Hg. The best thing on a Y-block is to use a '57 or later mechanical advance distributor with non-stock carbs.
the Stromberg WW series has a 4bolt pattern that is the same as the Rochester 2bbl carb from the 60s 55 up I believe. this is an old intake meant for the 4 bolt Strombergs but the Rochester 2bbl bolts right on as seen here. They used to be dirt cheap with every Chevy hotrodder in town having plenty in their junk pile but with the recent popularity of trips, they are getting more costly. Hunt around there are cheap ones around if you are patient. Easy to rebuild and work quite well.
Send JeffB2 a message here he is the master at this stuff. You can get a '57 Intake on eBay for around $40-$70, get a '57-up distrubuter as well. There is an adapter for the intake to run a "normal" style carb I unfortunately bought one for $20 (Now I work at a machine shop lol). I went with a Holley 600 for mine. You may have to jet it down a bit but this setup usually does wonders. Y-Blocks are super reliable. Just need a '57 up distributer and a new carb. That being said I'm taking the easy way out (idiot way) and putting a boring 302 in the car now lol. My Y-Block is going in a Cobra though so it's all good.
.[/QUOTE] Actually that isn't all good at all. The Cobra kit car should get the 302 and you should keep the Y block. Without it your car is just another transplant car and you said it yourself...Boring
