I have an old zenith updraft carb that I have to save. <center> As you can see the float bows is severely pitted, all the way through in some spots. Any ideas on how to save this? I was thinking about trying that 2 part gas tank putty. I did pull this off a running engine (that has to run again soon) The holes were "plugged" with what looked like red clay mud. BTW this is off a 1950 something Hough front end loader. I have no idea what the engine is, other then 4cyl OHV. Thanks for any help. I figured someone here would know how to save it. If that were mine, I would use JB Weld, it is a 2 part epoxy and gasoline does not seem to bother it.
Thanks for the suggestions. I have not had good luck with JB weld and gas though. Carbking : No tags on the carb. Very little info on the machine at all. TopHat
If you have some old IHC four cylinder tractors around H or W4 (I'm not sure at the moment if they used Zenith carbs), see if they have a similiar carb. Hough was sold to IHC some time in the early 50s, they may have used the same engine.
The tag is round, approximately the size of a dime, and is riveted to the body of the carburetor. There should be 2 numbers going around in a circle. The outer number would be the Hough number; the inner number the Zenith number. JB weld will get soft in approximately 3 months if used as a bowl repair in the bottom of the bowl; and fail shortly after that. If the casting is cast iron, is may be possible to braize in repairs, or silver solder. Jon.
Look at a DEVCON Product. This product has been around almost as long as that carb. You cant loose. Good luck.
This might be a long shot, but if you know anyone at Kinsler the fuel injection guys, they have a green epoxy that used to be used on the old style injection setups that is impervious to about anything and will last pretty much longer than you or I. I have seen a set of race heads we used that epoxy on 20 or so years ago, these heads are still performing perfectly. We have used the epoxy on heads, intakes and yes carbs.
Carbking, never had that experience with JB Weld, longest running test I ever had was a hole dead in the bottom of a gas tank. I drove that one for another 7 yrs with not ever a drip, and last I knew it was still holding. Maybe they have changed the product, that has been a while back.
