HEY I'VE GOT A FORD 390ci THAT NEEDS A NEW CARB, FOUR BARREL MANIFOLD WITH A TWO BARREL ON IT NOW, IT'S SHOT, OLD AGE, WILL GO WITH FOUR OR TWO, I WOULD RATHER SAVE GAS, I NEED HELP, WHICH WOULD BE THE BEST WAY. I'VE HEARD YOUR ALWAYS MESSING WITH A HOLLEY, ADJUSTING. ANY RECOMMENDATIONS I REALLY NEED HELP!! P.M. ME PLEASE
The old Autolite 2bbl was 350 cfm, on 390's. My father had one on his 67. As long as your adapter will work with that base configuration, I'd put either a rebuilt stocker on it, or a Holley 350, seeing how you are looking more for milage than performance. However on something that size the 500 cfm holley would be my choice of 2bbls. Personally I doubt if the milage would change that much, as long as you don't have your foot into it all of the time. As for them being prone to constant tuning, I totally disagree. I've run them for years without touching them on daily drivers. Just set it up once and forget it. Clean the crud off of them now and then, and so forth.
REMOVE THE 4 -> 2 ADAPTER!!! It costs you BOTH POWER and ECONOMY! (A) O.E. Carter AFB (B) O.E. Autolite 4100 And in the for what its worth category: 1968 F-100 390 dual Carter AFB's 21.5 MPG on real gasoline, 18.5 MPG on E-10. 390's are great engines (opinion, others may differ). Jon.
I agree, a two barrel is not going to give you better economy over an appropriately sized four barrel.
Better off buying an aluminum intake on ebay and a 500 holly avenger carb and tune it. Should give you good mileage and better operation all around plus you will lose 80 lb. of dead weight on the intake or close to it.
+1! I have the OE Autolite on my Tbird and I can average 20mpg as long as I keep it my foot out of it and under 70 mph.
The factory Ford 4-barrel intake will weigh approximately 65 pounds. The aluminum intake approximately 15. The Holley will weigh approximately 4 pounds more than either the Carter or the Autolite; thus the savings in weight will be approximately 45~50 pounds. Some of the original Ford cast iron intakes are more efficient than most of the A/M. I used the Offenhauser aluminum 2x4 because I didn't care for the price of an original Ford 2x4 manifold. When I was still running the single Carter AFB, I used the original (heavy) Ford intake. Jon.
