I was pulling apart my 312 yesterday, and found that the carb linkage was falling apart. I took care of the pieces and thought I could try to fix it... I forgot to identify the carb, but I think it is the original out of a '57 merc. Do anyone have a picture or split that shows the linkage? The next surprise came when I should loosen the head bolts, they was verrrry loose... I thought there might be a crack in the head cause the previous owner replaced the headgaskets to cure thecoolantintoexhaust problem. Now it seams like he forgot the torque wrench... The gasket was blown, so I'll just replace them and torque wrench it together again. I'll remove the sump too and check the torque on the bearing bolts as I'm not sure if he has been there too...

Found out today its a carter afb. It seems to be pretty worn out. Would an edelbrock 1405 be an easy fit?

Yes, a Y block will respond well to an Edelbrock. Be sure to use a spacer at least a half inch thick. You may even need longer studs. Head bolts; some people see two lengths. There are three. Short on the outside of course. Then there are two long, and three others. The long bolts go in the end holes.

This has gotten some great reviews on other sites,Summit's version is an upgrade of the 4100 Ford used by Ford yet it features EZ to get Holley parts internally.I read several posts where guys that had the Edelbrocks and 600 Holleys before gained performance and 3-4 MPG.http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-m08600vs

Jeff, this fits on the 4 barrel intake? I'm not very familiar with Holley carbs, I like the Edelbrocks because of the easy tuning facilitys...

The Summit Carb has the same base as a Holley or AFB/Edelbrock.
