I have an older 350 in a 48 chevy pu. I cannot find why it will not run without the choke being closed. I ran 3/8 fuel line, could that be the problem?? LOST!!!

  2. Could be any number of problems, what carb? Are the floats adjusted right? When was the last time it had a thorough cleaning? Plugged filter? New problem or just new to you problem?

Vacuum leak and/or dirt in the idle system .... line size has nothing to do with it ....

It would have to be a very huge vac leak...so I would say the carb has plugged jets/p***ages.

We get that a lot with older equipment that is not used daily, due to the methanol blends.

My vote is on vacuum leak, second would be clogged idle ports in the carb or other **** inside. Third would be ignition related. Such as point gap. The fast idle of the choke could be masking the problem.
Check your basics first. Look for vacuum leaks, then check your points if you have them, then check a spark plug. If that all checks out, look into carb issues.
What kind of carb are you using?

Sorry guys, just learning this comp. I have an EDELBROCK 650 on the engine. I have checked the system for vacuum leaks. I have even changed carbs. The one on it now came off my 32 and worked fine I did however have some small wood shavings fall into my fuel tank. I thought they were caught by my filter.

Pull off the carb and examine the carb to manifold gasket. Replace it.

  12. Try changing the filter that probably won't cure it but it sure won't hurt it. I am going to guess that one of your orifices in the carb has saw dust in it.

When you clean it out don't forget the p***age that connects both float bowls to the fuel inlet. Last couple of those I went through had plugged screens behind the needle and seat along with ****-ola in the p***age. Check the torque on your intake manifold bolts as well. Spray some carb cleaner on the gasket mating surface with it running. If the engine revs up, your intake has got a leak.
What sort of ignition system are you running?
