Hello, I have a 31 Model A that has a 48 flathead in it. I have been having issues with the carb (Holley). I have been thinking of just getting a new carb (Already rebuilt the existing carb). Originally was thinking of getting a stromberg, but my father was talking to a friend that said that the he had a Rochester carb on his flathead and ran great. The intake is just for a single carb and has a 3 bolt base. There is also a vacuum line (I think for the distributor) on the existing carb as well. Sorry for the questions but I am new at this and just need some guidance on what I would need Question 1) Will the Stromberg and/or the Rochester carb simply bolt up the same as the holley does? or would I need an adaptor 2) Will there be the same connections for the fuel and vacuum. Thanks for any and all info
If you want to run a small base Rochester 2 bbl on your flathead, find an intake from a '49-'53 Mercury. Same bolt pattern.
Stromberg direct interchange, Rochester will require work on lines, linkage. The manifold change above from Heathen is much better than an adaptor because of throttle size and layout. '48 car or pickup? Car is early engine with distributor out the front, truck has distributor sticking up diagonally and uses the vac output on your carb. A carb is just a chunk of metal with various holes in it...why not debug what you have is this is basically a stocker?
Your probably right on just fixing the problem. Distributor is on the front of the motor, but does have a small metal vacuum line going to the carb (Which my father says is from the Distributor) Its just the car has been giving me and father these little gremlin issue (Issue after issue). First the car would turn over and run fine, then after heating up would vapor lock. So off an idea I found here we put on some rubber fuel line over the top of all the exposed metal fuel line, and then made a heat shield to cover the fuel pump. But last time we ran it to see if the vapor lock was gone we couldn't keep it running. It would not idle right at all. Now we cant get the engine to start all. It cranks over but does not want to start. We checked and its getting spark. We checked and it seems to be getting gas in to the throat of carb. But I dont know if getting enough gas. After cranking a few times me and my father were expecting to smell gas (Due to flooding) but there was little gas smell. Guess we just have to keep at it. Car has been in the family for 50 years (father bought when he was 18) and in his garage for the past 25-30 years. We have been working on it (off and on when we have time) for the past year. We are so close.
