Hello I'm helping a friend with a 49 ford shoebox with a 226 c.id. engine. He had the carburator rebuilt at one time and let gas evaporate in it and it crusted up and the carb clogged up. I took it about with no problem but when I tipped it on it's side a rod came out and I don't know exactly where it came from. The carb is a tollitson model yr3. It looks like a ford 8h8 carb with some small exterior differances but I'm not too profeciant with these style of carbs. I was wondering if any one know if there is another rod I'm missing I didn't see fall, there is 2 spots in the center of the body of the carb where the rod can fit into or if someone can tell me where to find an exploded view.
I can look in an old manual I have...the sections on carbs may not even show that one though. Going to the shop in an hour or so..I will look so,at least you get a BTT
Hmmmm... I hate it when that happens. I have a sheet out of a rebuild kit at work. I'll take a look and see if its the same.
2 old Motors Manuals only show Tillotsen on Willys. 49 Willys Till carb shows the pin being the "power valve pin". There is a T bracket that pushes down on the Accel pump on one end, and the other end of the T pushes down on that pin. It's a deep hole with a plug coming from the bottom of the carb. That plug holds a spring with a ball bearing at the top. So, when the long pin gets pushed down, it pushes the ball downwards off of it's seat...letting gas go through the power circuit. That's Willys with no carb ID number.
The Tillotson YR series carbs were strictly mail order A/M; sold to those customers too frugal to purchase a rebuilding kit for the original carb. Willys did use Tillotson through the 1939 model year, but these were U series carbs; the YR series is quite different. Best advice would be have your friend find an original carb at a swap meet, and rebuild it. Jon.
till carbs were usaully a after market item, which could be purchased at Western Auto parts and Sears or any parts store It's a love hate part. Good Luck
Thanks for your input guys f&j that does quite make sense for what I have, the accel pump only has one part to it, it just pushes down and fuel comes up thru a pot with a needle and seat.
Ok, a thousand apologies for resurrecting a dead thread but I've been researching all day and haven't found much of substance... Where do the UR carburetors slot into this? I'm reading that the original D-series Willys downdrafts from '33-'35 did not age well because of the pot metal used. Were the UR's replacements for those? They look a lot like the U's fitted to late-'30s/early-'40s Willys.
