I need some carpet for the '55 on the cheap. Those molded 80/20 loop products look nice but are outta my range, price wise. Riddle me this: Why can't I just go down to the local carpet house and snag some nice residential carpet? Comments? Suggestions? Wisecracks!
Pre-formed is best because it's going to fit (esp trans tunnel) much better. It's made to fit your ride. Take's more abuse. But if you really want to try it yourself,Menard's has some decent stuff, and cheap. Take time to cut-fit-cut and it will be ok.Getting it to stay put is an issue.I used some in my low budget truck but it will not last under heavy use.A tip: They have roll's of insulation that is air bubble's sandwiched between silver foil.Use as sound deadner/carpet backing, ect.(It's great to use between you and the ground). You can use it for 'carpet' in the mean time, it's cool looking by itself.
Hey Radman, I have been shopping pretty hard for a good price on 80/20 molded loop carpet for my Valiant wagon. I just found a place on Friday called ABC Auto Upholstry in Las Vegas (www.autoupholsterykit.com). They are the lowest price I could find at $97.50. Every shop I have compared for carpet features ACC carpet and the range has been from $175 (ACC direct) to $97.50 at ABC Auto Upholstry. Shipping is more than most at $26.80. That makes the total cost $124.30 delivered. Some shops wanted more for their carpet and less for shipping but it's still the best price I can find. I may even make a weekend of it and head out to Vegas to save the shipping and have a blast on top of that. If you like I'll post the other sites I went shopping at so you can see the differences. Here's my suggestion. I've done this before for tires: Don't eat for a week and go for the 80/20 molded carpet. It will be worth it in the long run. Good luck, Michael
If you try doing this from carpet from the local carpet store let the carpet set in the sun on the blacktop. This will let the carpet stretch like a rubber band. If it doesn't stretch enough over the ****** mist it with water only over the ****** or try taking the secondary backing off the carpet but be carefull. Any of these will make molding the carpet alot easier but letting it set in the sun is the first option I would try. Use spray tack to hold it down spray the floor and the carpet and let it dry to the touch then set it in.
