1935 Renault Primaquatre with late '35/early'36 license plate, cut down to obtain gas ration tickets, with a wood gasifier and blackout headlight. Typical WWII mods.
For the history buff : The main regional city of that license plate is La Rochelle France which was a main nazi naval base with a huge submarine bunker that is still standing despite being a frequent bombing target but with a 7 meter (almost 10 feet) thick concrete roof it was literally indestructible.

Good history, thanks. 7 meters is actually 22.96 feet according to Google. Take a lot of bomb to penetrate that.

IMG_1457.jpeg Notice the wood stove behind the cab I think that’s what it is . But I could be mistaken . Gas engines can run off the smoke from burning wood. There was a significant loss of HP but when there is no gasoline a person could still get around.

Would say you are on the right track there. Somewhere in Continental Europe, WW11 when gasoline was in short supply.

The wood is gasified, then that gas is injected in the engine via a special carburetor there may have been some kind of injection also to be burned by the engine. It's not the smoke. No engine runs on smoke, some produce more than others though.
