Generally not a fan of these type of conversions, but this one I really dig.

I bought this former coupe a few years back. Reportedly converted by the seller's grandfather back in the day. Had a clear truck title with matching numbers.

Back about 1967, I tried to talk my Dad into stuffing a 289” into his ‘30 roadster. Once he figured out it wasn’t a bolt in deal, we got this ‘32 dust bowl pickup and put the 289” in it with a ‘39 trans. She was kinda rough, but we had a lot of fun with her: 6D118442-47B4-43EF-8C94-2F1E6E080A2E.jpeg

My great uncle used the Henry Ford method of sourcing pick ups. He would grab an existing car, remove everything that wasn't a pick up and add a bed. Only his donor came from the back row of a car lot as some ones cast away. He preferred Chryslers, Hudsons and Whippets.

This sad looking creature came out of a barn in rural Oregon. About three months after I bought it, my wife and were moving and when it came time for one of the final meetings with the couple we were buying the house from, I drove my '36 5 window out to the property.

When the husband saw my car, he started talking about old cars and how his brother had a Model A Coupe back in the day, etc. He launched into a long story about how his brother dragged this car home in the late 1950's and how it had a bad motor. He described being very young and watching his brother pull the engine out of the car in the old barn out back. He then said that sadly his brother died about a week later in a fluke plane crash. He always wondered what had ever happened to that old car.

Then he said, "I'll never forget it - it had a truck bed in the back of it and the day he dragged it home, he and I painted "A-BOMB" on the cowl with a brush. (See second photo)

    Small world or what?

Funny story, My pops and my T roadster project had the turtle deck cut apart quite crudely and missing the the deck lid. We figured it was made into a pickup. So I ordered bun panels to repair the rot in the body. when I got the parts they were different from what’s on the car so I called the people I got the sheetmetal from and explained that the parts I ordered for a T roadster are not what’s on the car. After answering a few questions it was determined that our car started life as a roadster pickup and then had a turtle deck put on it and later hacked into a pickup. So roadster pickup-turned roadster-turned pickup and finally to the roadster we are building now. D0D9B7C6-B180-4857-B0ED-72FAA222E132.jpeg

Anyone who reads the John D. McDonald Travis McGee books know that h drove a late 30's Rolls-Royce pickup truck conversion.

The rear of the top and the side windows are where most of these fail. I think a rearward sloping B pillar makes a better looker than an straight upright one unless we’re talking about square 30’s models. I’ve seen a couple of tri five Chevies that used a Nomad style B pillar that hit it out of the park, while those that used a straight up B pillar like a pickup looked awkward. On 50’s and 60’s cars, a thin B pillar looks better than a thick one. Just my two cents, probably not worth that…

I believe this is a factory chev coupe Ute. Built for a well known NZ rugby player when he realised his 6’6” frame would not fit in a chopped 34 coupe as he originally began building.
