ask bureau of land managment first. specify "old" and broken cars that are incomplete and abandoned. paint the worst case scene. you, the civilian doing your part to recycle and reuse this "trash" on your dime and time to remove this "trash". present yourself with confidence, show the idiot on the other end of the phone with respect and hammer em for answers. hopefully you will get what you need. probably a permit or something.
Bring some kids in Boy Scout/ Cub Scout uniforms with you and if you get caught say it was a forestry badge project gone bad.
There was a time, not long ago, that the "law of trover" applied to government lands. That is, if the item is lost or abandoned (think arrowheads and civil war ****ons) and you find it, then it is yours. However, most states now have laws that say that anything found on government land is a historical treasure and belongs to the state. Big fines and big jail time for taking any "historical treasure".
Take then ask for forgiveness and you'll be asking for forgiveness in jail! Over in the old ghost town of Gillmore, Idaho (just outside of Salmon, Idaho) there are a few car/truck bodies (also old stoves, heaters ETC that have been there for years if you even look like your planning to load them up you will be arrested or even attempt to take a stick of wood you'll be arrested, they figure it's all part of the history of Idaho. You'd better ask someone before do anything.
didn't Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin make a movie about taking a abandoned old car ... that was "radioactive!" good luck check it out at night and see if they glow!
It's weird how the wind blows on the HAMB. I remember a while back where someone asked a similar question and plenty of people jumped in his **** about unauthorized taking, private property, theft, etc. Is the difference being that those people aren't online at the moment, have mellowed out, or is it that Acey appears to live in a more rural environment? I'm just trying to understand, there are a couple cars I can thin of that I would like, but I have HAMBers sitting on my shoulder saying, "THief, THief, THief ..." I would LOVE to see a car in caring hands any day as opposed to rotting away. Just so you know how I feel.
Dont just take them there may be factors you dont know about. You already know that it is wrong or you would not have asked on this forum. You also know the saying take what you want you will pay for it.Another thing are you sure that it is goverment land. Around here there are lots of private parcels surrounded by govt land.Besides if it is the goverments property it belongs as much to me as it does you and you dont have my permission to convert my share of it to your personal property OldWolf
I also live in Idaho and know of some abandoned 1930's car bodies. I thought they were on either State or Federal land. I checked with BLM and confrimed that they were on Federal land once I disclosed the EXACT location. The BLM Office guy told me that they are considered trash and that they welcomed me to take what I want, so long as I don't disturb any virgin soil or start a gr*** fire or anything. They asked me to not go in to get them during the months of July - September because of the higher wild fire danger. There is a circa 30-34 5 window coupe body that i plan to get once the snow melts and maybe a couple of 1930's pickup cabs. It is worth it to check so you know whether your'e aligned with Government interests or not.
I have a friend in Sandpoint, he is visiting warmer climes at the moment, leave his stuff alone! He is saving it for another day, it is not trash.
Yep. Determine exact location, determine landowner, ask for permission, promise not to leave a mess and to tread lightly. Worst thing they can say is no -
I would find out who the land owner is and defiantly ask for permission like others have said. If you get the big N O then just have one of your buddies go across town and start throwing Napalm around, while the police and fire dept. are busy with that then go in quick as you can and grab it all.
the thing is, where i am, a majority of the state land is being sub-developed, so in a year or so, the cars i am talking about will be crushed, and hauled to the metal recycling plant in town. Loggers tend to do this a lot. they like to run over the old cars bodies with their machinery. I actually have talked to a lot of them and occasionally they will put car bodies aside for me. Again these cars are in the middle of nowhere......so whats the worse that could happen?
Save yourself a ********ing. Go through the proper channels.....get permits and/or written permission with names.....then if you get the all clear...rock on ! It ain't worth a trip to the slammer.
get a case of krylon the same color as the state wildlife trucks, spray yours with it and nobody will take a second look! just kidding dude, better ask someone because the person you get caught by might try and say you disturbed the endangered....? and they will either fine the hell out of you or...?
I know where there is a nice abandoned model a truck on Ted Turners million acre nature conservatory.I've known about it for at least 5 years. It's still sitting there. The sand hills are slowly swallowing it up. Hey Ted, think I can have that old truck? P.M. me.
It is rare (up here) to find any old vehicle on state land, let alone one that is not overloaded with bullet holes. What shape are they in?
Here in Arizona, our off-road clubs have clean-up days on State Land that they let us four wheel on. The state provides dumpsters and usually supervision (park rangers etc) and is truly grateful that someone cares about the land. Unfortunately most of the **** we clean up is from irresponsible shooters and burned down stolen cars. I would strongly advise that you make sure it really is state land and not somebody's property. There is a BIG difference, and taking a car from someone's private land could get you shot. Good luck!
i would try to get permission first then go get them more than likely they will say yes, i would play the greenie role and tell them the cars ar contaminating the soil (i.e leaking oil and coolant)and don't say their cars just tell them their auto parts and peices and not whole cars i bet they will tell you to please remove them as to not start a ruckus with the tree huggers.
Absolutely what I was thinking. I think I know which thread you are talking about, and I posted my opinion early on, which was "save the tin!". Then an avalanche of right thinking people skewered everyone who thought the guy should grab the "abandoned" car. I definitely re-thought my position on rescuing something that was in danger of being crushed, but didn't belong to the rescuer, and realized the majority was right. Of course we all know what is right and wrong, and I suppose lines can get gray when its something you want that has been left for dead. For giving my opinion, I ended up on some hamber's "list" of people not to do business with. Just for an impulsive and definitely not thought-out comment on a message board, as though I, MYSELF, STOLE SOMETHING!! Watch what you say, you might end up on some jack***'s "list"!!!
to the guy on the end of page 2 who said its just as much his as is mine... you have no idea what your talking about. id like to see you come out into the northwest looking for these cars. you couldnt! i really think that if you found a 32 roadster in the woods you wouldnt go tell somebody about it and leave it there for them to get. You sound like a selfish pr*** who wants it all for himself. just my opinion. I will upload some pics tonight. and some tomorrow afternoon guys. Yes, a lot of them are covered and bullet holes. but these ones have been spared due to the fact that nobody llikes to go out to where they are. I know at the very end of the road which is near where the cars are there is a boarding school for really bad kids. I know it was placed there so that they would not even think to run away. It really is far away from any other town or anything. I know its Grizzly country too. ive seen a few out there. also a ton of elk, moose, and mountain lions. Really not a safe place to go alone. no cell service either. im rambling. anyways i will upload some pics in a few
thats how i got my 51 Ford, my friend and i were running around in the woods and found it with a tree that fell through the middle of it. (we were 13 at the time) we walked around for hours it seemed till we found the guy that owned it. i asked him how much he wanted for it and he said "how much do you have?" we managed to pull out $42 between the both of us (gr*** cutting money)and he said "come back this weekend and ill have it in the driveway for you". that weekend dad and i went up there and sure enough it was sitting there waiting on us to load it.
i bought a 26 t coupe out of the woods for 50 bucks. Dont get the idea that I go around looking for cars to steal, but if i see a car that i know isnt going anywhere on public land and is going to rot, im going to either build it or turn into profit. better than letting it rot back into the ground. Im not out to screw anybody over, its a way to keep hot rodding going. and honestly dont give a flying **** if people call me a ****in thief. i just think their jealous. Not to piss you guys off anymore, but here are some cars/trucks ive found here within the past YEAR nonetheless. 32 Ford fordor sedan complete with pines grill, 34 dodge pickup, 26 t coupe (bought), 34 ford pickup(bought), 28 A tudor, 30 A pickup, 51 crown vic, 49 merc 2 door, 25 dodge roadster, 36 willys sedan, 32 studebaker sedan 27 t sedan, **** load of 32 chevys for some reason, 33 dodge coupe, and way more that i cant remember off hand, and these are all within 75 miles of my house. and remember thats just this year.
