2002 -- 1st runs ever for Street Roadster with 301" motor on gas-- at SpeedWeek! 1st Run, qualify for long course. 2nd Run, go to Impound, 3rd Run, back up new record at 190. Gee! This is easy!

That #17 in the 2nd pic is a local car that ran at our dirt track back in the mid 60s. The guy, Norm Minert (I probably killed the spelling of his last name), ran the car up until the track changed from the coupes to the late models, around 1966.
The Norm took the car home after the last race drained the fluids, and put it up in the loft of his barn, where it has resided for years.
He built a new late model, a 66 Chevelle (and several other cars), and went on to set the record fast time that stood for many years.
Several years ago, 4 or 5 of the coupes that raced here were restored back to as raced condition and started being shown at local tracks, and other events. When Norm found out people were interested in the old coupes, he told the other guys he still had his old coupe up in the loft of his barn, in the same condition it was last raced in. They urged him to get it out. Rumer was he retrieved it from the loft, topped off the fluids and replaced the battery and it fired right up.
The car is pictured at our town's local Cruise Night event. The Freeport (IL) Public Library allows historic original or restored Freeport related vehicles to be parked on its lot, which is where the picture was taken. This car still wears the original paint it had that last day it ran, back around 1965. The track didn't survive, but a few of the cars did, including Norm's coupe.

On my first walk around at the huge warehouse holding the newly created Lion’s Dragstrip Museum in 2017, I missed a lot of things due to the awesome displays and the old time drag racers in attendance.

I stopped and talked to a lot of old racers and it was a proud moment when someone noticed my old 16mm color films I had just created for the museum display on their giant 80 inch wall mounted monitor. Since the old films were now digital, they were edited with only films from Lion’s Dragstrip during the 1958 to 64 era, trying to get the time line fairly close to how it happened. The cool thing was, no one else had taken any films of that era. There were photographers always inside of the fenced off area next to the actual dragstrip, but for some reason, those films have not been made public.

I was told that my films were the only ones from that time period of early Lion’s Dragstrip history. On the previous display set up days, race cars that I knew from back in those days were rolled into the warehouse floor. Fortunately, arriving during this time was a great choice as the cars were all alone and waiting for the finished set up display. A photographer’s dream photo shoot time period. No public, no workers, just the drag racing history sitting right in front of you.. That was nice!

So, I was wondering how that display was going to be finished when the grand opening day/night was going to happen in the following week.

When the grand opening of the museum was happening, I almost missed the event. We had been invited to go to our granddaughter’s ballet/dance concert event with her in a starring role. It lasted through the early afternoon.

But the whole opening was attended by some of those racers who were there back during the same time period of the late 50s and into the early 60s. Some continued on to many seasons of racing and different cars. The emphasis seemed to be with the race cars we all grew up with in person during the weekend races.

Mike Cook, the son of Doug Cook, was in the booth with the Stone, Woods, & Cook, Swindler 2. It was the centerpiece of the museum display. We exchanged photos, ideas and information. It was fun talking to him. The display was pretty cool. I gave him some photos of the early set up days with no one around and the car in its glory…

The original nose of the Willys Coupe was there as a reminder of the changes to this race car history.
