Does anyone one know someone who rebuilds carburetors? It’s on a 1950 silver streak. Carter 720s. I’ve never rebuilt one and I’ve trouble shot the hesitation to the carb. Previous owner claims he attempted to rebuild it so I’d say it’s **** since he said he did not know how to work on cars lol. I’ve timed it, new plugs, points, coil, etc. or do I just get the kit and rebuild it? Is there a video to watch that some old timer has put up?
I didn't have a video to watch to rebuild my first one at age 14. You can handle it.... Don't take out the screws that hold the "****erflies" in (the throttle and choke plates). They are staked in place, and will break off, and do not need to be removed. Clean everything well. I use spray can carb cleaner, and compressed air, and screwdriver to s****e off gunk, and a brush to scrub with. Go through every adjustment that is shown on the instructions, that applies to your carb. When you encounter something you don't understand, ask about that part, and remember pictures of what you're asking about are really helpful. You know how to post pictures, that's a great start.
It is an easy carb to rebuild, and like Jim, I didn't have a video when I was 14 either. However, a suggestion: before you rebuild the carb, check the adjustment of the idle mixture control screws, and the throttle positioner screw. Anything over 1 1/4 turns on the idle mixture control screws CAN cause the hesitation. A good initial starting point is 1 turn. For cleaning, Dawn dishwater soap mixed with water, and boil the carburetor in this mixture. Will clean oil, dirt, and grease. The spray carb cleaner afterward to clean any carbon buildup. Once the carb is clean, again boil in Dawn to get rid of the carb cleaner residue, and then in water to get rid of the soap. Jon.
