I have a friend who is hot for me to get this Carter 9605s (2953) AFB from him, for a Ford project I am working on. The engine is a 302, C4 trans with kickdown linkage. The old school big bar/tube type that goes from the carb all the way to the trans kickdown. When I looked up a 9605s, it is a Universal GM carb. Am I correct in thinking there's no way this carburetor is going to work on my car? I am sure it's a fine carb, but I don't want it if I have to do a bunch of home made modifications for it to work. I would rather have something that will just bolt on and go.

I don't know but carbking on the HAMB does. He runs the carburetor shop and was able to identify the AFBs that I had for my project.

Nothing Justus bolts on. Look up Edelbrock to see it there's a kit for Fords with their universal fit. Remember Carter sold all that stuff to them and back in the day you either bought one for a GM or Ford specific.

Or will an edelbrock adapter work on it? Someone was saying the #1483 bracket works?

Your best bet would be to leave the clone 9605s (yes, I know it says Carter, but it isn't) to the Chevy dudes, and look for either a 9627s or 9637s Carter. Both have the auto trans kick-down.

I probably won't get a Carter at all, if this one isn't going to work. Probably get a Holley instead.

Holleys were Ford specific at one time too and their throttle side was definately different than your typical Chevrolet. Not sure now. Good luck....

Looking at an 1850. I want to find a knowledgable sales person, that knows what I need. Or at least ask someone that has installed one and knows what works.

Not all Ford automatics require the kick-down. Mine did, so I replaced it with a 4-speed manual. Issue solved.

You might check with a transmission shop to see if yours requires the kick-down. If so, then regardless of the carburetor brand, make sure it will work with the transmission (or use my solution ;) ).

It has one on it now, so I imagine it does require it. Engine/trans is still in the car, though the intake and valve covers are off. It had an intake with a factory Autolite 2bbl. and the big 1/2" looking tube with smashed ends connected to the carb and lever on the trans. Engine will be rebuilt with about 300hp, and a four barrel intake and carb added. I don't have the funds to rebuild the engine AND buy a four speed trans, modify it with a clutch pedal, modify the console, buy a shifter, etc etc etc. WAY too much trouble and expense. I'll stick with the C4 and be on the road several months and thousands of bucks sooner.
