Seems like it would be easier to get the pump for the Edelbrock AFB and find out first hand. I think there's a small bore and a large bore pump, I would think you'd have the small bore pump on your application. I could be wrong though...

As I posted in post number 20 in this thread:

"Carter used at least 4 different diameters, more than a dozen different lengths, and both articulated and non-articulated pumps in the AFB/AVS carbs."

If any of you find a good source for leather pumps in wholesale quan***ies, please post!

I have been making them here in the shop for 25 years.

For those who wish to make their own:

The leather cup washer may be formed by making a "mold" from 1 inch plywood. Use a hole saw to saw out the OUTER diameter of the pump. Save the inner "doughnut hole". Use a wood rasp, and taper the hole on one side of the plywood; this will be the entry side.

Acquire some "crown leather" (nothing else will work). A good source (if you can find one) is a saddle maker, as they use crown leather for parts of the saddle. Most are very happy to sell the s****s.

Cut a piece of the leather with a diameter about two inches greater than the O.D. of the pump. Soak the leather in water for an hour. Place the doughnut hole in the center of the wet leather, and press the leather and doughnut hole into the mold. Let it dry for 24 hours. Now, GENTLY push the leather and doughnut hole from the mold. CAREFULLY cut the skirt of the leather to the correct length with an exacto knife. You now have a leather cup.

The expansion spring may be wound using a manual spring winding kit (these are available from several tool suppliers).

Machine the shaft (either 1 piece if solid, or two pieces if articulated) on a jewelers lathe. Machine the "thimble" ( the holder for the cup and the spring) on the lathe. Machine a washer of the proper inner and outer diameter to cover the top of the leather.

***emble. If a two piece shaft, you can move the outer over the inner, by spinning on the jewelers lathe.

You should only have to do this ONCE (unless you are kin to Methuselah). The leather pumps in the dual AFB's on my shop truck are approaching 24 years, and still work well.

As mentioned, there are four different diameters for the AFB/AVS Carters. In all, we fabricate pumps in 9 different diameters (the largest being for Johnson/Cadillac carburetors).
