I have an Edelbrock c-26 manifold with Carter comp. series 500cfm carbs that I picked up a swap meet at least 25 years ago. Plan was to use it on Sbc 4 speed 35 Ford pickup. Since that project is on back burner have decided to run it on 383 Sbc in 59 gmc I hope to have back on the road next summer. I do realize that it will make more power with Holley 770 on it presently. I like the look of 2x4 setup and would like to get it in use and working while I’m still able to drive. Neither carb has any provision for a choke. The holes in carb top and air horn are not drilled. Have looked on line for used carbs matching these with choke. These are 4000 series carbs and in 500cfm haven’t found any. I don’t plan much cold weather running, so am I worrying about a non issue. Opinions welcome. I have also wondered if Carter sold carbs as pairs for 2x4 setups. Carb numbers are k1 4761s and L2 4761s. I apologize for no pictures. Have to get my sons help with that. I appreciate any input. Have read that I will need to run phenolic spacers to keep fuel from boiling. Reposting I hope in right place. Thanks
I have a pair of 750s of that series that one have provision for a choke and not the other. I would think they made 500s also.
Look for a 4768 that would be a rear carburetor for the front's you have. Just found my catalog from 1969.
There’s more to it than just the choke bolt holes, there’s the shaft and ****erfly, fast idle cam, links and a choke unloader lever, IIRC. You might be better off to buy a cheap 625 cfm or something to harvest parts from. But you mostly need to ask yourself if you really need a choke in the first place. With a good ignition and two properly functioning AFBs one or two squirts and it should fire right up. You may have to act as a “human fast idle cam” for a few seconds but…..
Average 383 10:5-1 ,1000 CFM is plenty. Choke Tuned correct , No choke Needed , Just need to lean what engine needs when starting cold . Are heads 200 cfm''s plus 2.050 Vavles, & bigger . Cam in ..570 ish plus If "" Looking for Performance"" instead of Eye candy. Vic Ram & Holley Strip D more superior over the C-26 if in 470 hp plus, Really a single Team G , Holley Strip 3 different intake's open plain for 450 - 600 hp 1 6,500 to 7 short 2nd 8,500 medium 3rd 10,000 Tall 26 is basically a dual plane 5,500 & like 460 hp ,
The matching 500cfm carb with a choke for the Carter 4761S is 4758S . It has a manual choke. So no fast idle cam or unloader is needed. You will probably be fine with a pair of 4761's
Unless your driving it in the winter id not worry much about the chokes if you have a matched set run them and see how it works out . Had twin carters on a BBC and never had chokes working.
2x4 going on a GM zz383 . Engine is still original spec. I really always liked and wanted a 2x4 setup. Looks. Think it will be enough for this engine.
Carbking on here is a wiz with AFBs and a big fan of dual quads. He has probably setup a few Chevy 2x4 setups in his career. Maybe he will chime in. If not, send him a PM but be prepared with all of the pertinent information. You are lucky to have two unmolested 500 cfm Carters, most have been rode hard and put away wet by now, with stripped threads and mix-matched parts. Jon sells premium rebuild kits with the leather accelerator pump plungers.
OP opened two identical threads, for the benefit of those reading, here is the other thread: https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/carter-compe***ion-carbs.1344812/ OP - yes, the two 500's will be sufficient for your 383. And, while I realize that most of the folks who read these boards are independantly wealthy , thus literally have money to burn ; running without chokes on a street driven engine causes the burning of money (exta fuel) ! The choke ****erflies act as "straightening vanes" and improve the air flow, thus the efficiency, at lower RPM. Both driveability and fuel economy will be improved. Jon
