The current thread about dual carters makes me wonder about carter carbs with edelbrock metering. The carter stuff is getting difficult to find and harder to tune.
What about rebuilding the carter using edelbrock jetting, metering rods, lifting springs, squirters etcetcetc?

I was told by a tech guy at Edelbrock you could interchange jets, metering rods (if three step only) springs etc. In fact I have done this on my Carter that is on my little roadster and it really ran better when I leaned it up a bit. Get the carb calibration book from Edelbrock and it just a matter of reading the charts for you particular carb. Use the jets/metering rods/springs etc to get your carb to run where you want it to.

Carter produced 505 different genuine AFB carburetors.

In these carburetors there are hundreds of different profile metering rods with at least 19 different formats.

There are also 3 different jet formats.

So (if you gamble) you have a 1 in 19 shot the rods could be used and a 1 in 3 shot the jets could be used.

    Springs, probably.

Carter produced 2 different series of A/M carbs; and then FM produced a 3 series that say Carter but are different from genuine Carter. Supposedly, the FM Carters would use similar part to the edelbrocks.

Personally (and I realize everyone does not have this capability), I would rather fabricate parts for my genuine Carters than use the e-parts (and maybe the e-parts have better quality control than when we tried them).

As marked in red...the reason it's getting harder to tune....AND the reason just changing jets, etc., isn't gonna help...is the throttle shaft to throttle body fit. The shafts wear, the throttle body wears, you have not only a vacuum leak, but you also have the problem of the ****erflys not closing at the exact same point any longer.

Just call it a day on the Carter carburetors. That is unless you have a nice clean copy and are willing to spend the bucks for new throttle shafts, rebush the throttle body and possibly new ****erflys.

Here is a link as to what to look for, and possibly a better understanding of Carter parts:

Forget the sales pitch at the bottom, this post is for information. These kits do occasionally surface on Ebay.
